Summary

Under indirect supervision, performs a variety of treatment planning and quality assurance services related to radiation therapy. Participates in related research and development of new radiation therapy procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Manages day-to-day clinical operations for the dosimetry group to ensure high-quality patient radiotherapy treatments. Ensures effective and regular communication between all clinical and non-clinical stakeholders.
  2. Develops and implements policy and procedures for patient treatment planning to ensure high levels of accuracy and efficiency with treatment planning processes.
  3. Participates in departmental performance quality improvement studies to improve various aspects of clinical processes.
  4. Maintains treatment planning guidelines and statistics for the dosimetry group in order to help monitor and improve clinical processes.
  5. Ensures all regulatory guidelines and institutional policies are consistently followed.
  6. Supervises the distribution, completion, and accuracy of assigned work.
  7. Generates patient treatment plans for all available treatment planning systems; views imaging data for positions and size of lesions, develops patient contours, creates and calculates a patient's treatment plan, evaluates the treatment plan's adherence to prescribed dose constraints.
  8. Evaluates treatment plans for potential errors using established QA checklists. Evaluates existing QA checklists for applicability, accuracy and efficiency.
  9. Prepares sealed radioactive sources and operates specialized equipment to assist in brachytherapy treatments of patients.
  10. Assists in the training and education of a variety of students, including radiation therapy students, physics students and medical students.
  11. Participates in a patient's treatment planning simulation; helping to determine necessary immobilization devices and other treatment needs.
  12. Participates in clinical and departmental research, including the development of new radiation therapy procedures, protocol adherence and submission, physics, retrospective studies, etc.
  13. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or certified radiotherapy technologist (RTT) from an accredited radiation therapy technology program; at least 3 years of clinical dosimetry experience. Certification/Licensure: current Certified Medical Dosimetrist (CMD) accreditation required.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to supervise and train assigned staff.
  • Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to monitor and/or maintain quality control standards.
  • Ability to develop and present educational programs and/or workshops.
  • Ability to read and interpret imaging data and utilize image management systems.
  • Ability to prepare radiation treatment plans for patients, based on prescribed dosages.
  • Ability to calibrate and operate radiation detection instruments.
  • Knowledge of radiation therapy methodologies, procedures and standards.
  • Knowledge of patient immobilization devices and related treatment needs for radiation patients.
  • Ability to safely handle sealed radioactive sources.
  • Leadership ability and passion for patient safety, process improvement, and quality.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Must maintain certification and/or licensure status.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
  • CPR Certified.
  • May be required to submit immunization records for review for required vaccines and TB testing.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work is performed in an interior medical/clinical environment.
  • Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
  • Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
