Summary

Reporting to the Director of Counseling Services, coordinates and oversees the Mental Health Collaborative, a clinical mental health internship training program within Student Health and Counseling (SHAC). Works collaboratively with clinical staff to support the development, implementation, and evaluation of training activities for graduate-level counseling and social work interns. Provides clinical supervision, internship placement, mentorship, and professional development to interns and trainees engaged in mental health service delivery. Maintains a clinical caseload providing psychosocial assessment, counseling, psychotherapy, and crisis intervention services to University students.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Coordinates and oversees the clinical mental health internship training program, including orientation, supervision structures, training seminars, consultation meetings, electronic record management, and trainee evaluation processes.
  2. Provides individual and group clinical supervision, feedback, and formal evaluations to mental health interns and other trainees engaged in mental health service delivery. Monitors trainee clinical work to ensure adherence to all applicable standards.
  3. Provides or oversees and coordinates the provision of a wide range of professional social and/or mental health services to clients and families. Provides or facilitates crisis intervention and emergency services as required. As appropriate to the position, provides counseling, therapy, and/or psychotherapy, anticipatory guidance, advocacy, and case management. May prepare treatment plans, discharge plans, and follow-up care programs.
  4. Coordinates care with campus partners and community providers and facilitates referrals to appropriate mental health and social service resources.
  5. Provides consultation to staff and campus partners regarding student mental health concerns and referral processes.
  6. Plans and facilitates psychoeducational workshops, outreach activities, and training sessions related to mental health and trainee development.
  7. Serves as liaison with academic training programs and community agencies regarding internship placements and training collaboration.
  8. Plans, develops, and implements strategies for identifying and generating funding and/or resource opportunities for program activities, to include development of grant and other funding proposals.
  9. Assists with the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and training protocols related to clinical supervision and service delivery.
  10. Participates in quality improvement initiatives, peer review activities, and program evaluation related to counseling services.
  11. Maintains accurate and timely training and clinical records and all other associated documentation in accordance with institutional, legal, and ethical standards.
  12. Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act.
  13. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or an equivalent field; at least 3 years of experience directly related to clinical mental health counseling, including experience providing clinical supervision, program development, or training. Certification/Licensure: State of New Mexico licensure as a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW/LISW), or equivalent independent clinical licensure. Approved Supervisor Designation through the New Mexico Regulation & Licensing Department, within 3 months from date of hire.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of clinical supervision practices and counselor development.
  • Knowledge of crisis intervention techniques and risk assessment procedures.
  • Knowledge of psychotherapeutic principles, clinical assessment, and treatment planning.
  • Knowledge of community mental health resources and referral processes.
  • Knowledge of trainee frameworks.
  • Knowledge of program development and oversight.
  • Ability to provide clinical supervision and mentorship to graduate-level trainees.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse university community.
  • Ability to observe, assess, and document client symptoms, treatment progress, and trainee development.
  • Skill in preparing and maintaining clinical and training documentation.
  • Ability to develop and facilitate training seminars and educational programming.
  • Knowledge of legal and ethical issues related to mental health practice and client rights.
  • Ability to develop and implement funding strategies and programs.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position requires: a) coordination of a graduate-level clinical internship training program within a university counseling center; b) provision of clinical supervision and professional mentorship to trainees; c) delivery of direct mental health services in a high-acuity campus clinical environment; d) collaboration with the Director of Counseling Services and clinical leadership to support training and quality clinical services.

  • Must maintain licensure and certification status.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • No or very limited physical effort required.
