Summary

Under minimal supervision, oversees and manages radiation therapy services and associated staff. Ensures adherence to established patient care standards, applicable regulations, and institutional policies/practices. Provides radiation therapy services, as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Supervises personnel which typically includes recommendations for hiring, dismissing, performance evaluation, training, work allocation, and problem resolution.
  2. Develops and improves departmental policies with key stakeholders. Implements and ensures departmental policies and procedures are followed to support continuous quality improvement objectives, safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards.
  3. Ensures adherence to state and federal regulations and works to improve the quality of radiotherapy practices.
  4. Monitors and coordinates the daily patient care activities of the unit; schedules staff and patients to ensure full coverage of patient care needs at all times and to ensure effective patient services.
  5. Participates in and coordinates the planning, development, and implementation of clinical protocols in assigned department.
  6. Assists in the annual budget planning process and regularly monitors expenditures.
  7. Researches, tests, and/or implements new devices and modalities for improved therapeutic use of radiation.
  8. Prepares statistical analyses and a range of written documentation, to include evaluation results, individualized treatment plans, progress reports, and departmental analyses.
  9. Reinforces recommendations given to patient by the physician, dietitian, or other care provider, concerning reaction to treatment and care of the irradiated area, and prevention or treatment of generalized and local side effects.
  10. Participates in the clinical instruction and supervision of radiation therapy students.
  11. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops.
  12. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Associate's degree; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Certification/Licensure: American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) certification and State of New Mexico licensed radiation therapist.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Possesses comprehensive knowledge of subject matter.
  • Ability to provide technical guidance and leadership to professional personnel in area of expertise.
  • Ability to effectively communicate medical information, test results, diagnoses and/or proposed treatment in a manner easily understood by the client.
  • Ability to interact with students, faculty and/or staff in a team environment.
  • Ability to evaluate the progress of therapeutic programs and to make individual modifications.
  • Knowledge of the nature and treatments of oncological diseases and of reactions and side effects of related therapy methods.
  • Knowledge of dosimetry and dosage standards.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to observe, assess, and record symptoms, reactions, and progress.
  • Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements and compliance standards.
  • Knowledge of planning and scheduling techniques.
  • Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.
  • Knowledge of linear accelerators, ultrasound, and CT equipment and associated systems.
  • Knowledge of the physical and operational characteristics of radiation equipment and facilities.
  • Knowledge of radiation therapy methodologies, procedures and standards.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Must maintain certification status.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Must maintain certification and/or licensure status.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
  • CPR Certified.
  • May be required to submit immunization records for review for required vaccines and TB testing.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Considerable physical activity. Requires moving objects or people 50 to 100 pounds occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds consistently; standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
  • Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
  • Work is performed in an interior medical/clinical environment.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
