Summary

Under indirect supervision, provides professional medical physics services for a principal radiation research/therapy unit of the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center. Evaluates and supervises medical radiation treatment prescriptions. Collaborates with medical providers in the design and modification of effective radiation treatments and supervises treatment plans. Provides quality assurance and participates in equipment monitoring, calibration, and safety surveys.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Performs all aspects of radionuclide- and brachytherapy-related physics services.
  2. Coordinates in-vivo dosimetry measurements.
  3. Provides professional program assistance for patient simulations.
  4. Develops or assists with the development and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure efficient and safe operation of radiotherapy treatments.
  5. Develops and participates in integrated radiation therapy quality control programs.
  6. Advises and consults with medical providers and specialists concerning various issues involving individual patients.
  7. Supervises or participates in the education and training of medical physicists, medical dosimetrists, radiation therapy technologists, students, physicians, and related specialists, as appropriate.
  8. Performs calibration checks and quality assurance measurements of linear accelerators and other sources of radiation.
  9. Assists with shielding analysis of treatment rooms.
  10. Participates in the establishment and coordination of broadly based radiation safety programs.
  11. Develops specifications for purchasing and assists in acceptance testing and commissioning of a wide range of advanced radiation therapy equipment.
  12. Assists in implementation and monitoring aspects of quality assurance programs to meet state and federal guidelines/requirements.
  13. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops.
  14. Participates in budget planning, and reviews fiscal reports as required; participates in planning for future facility and equipment requirements, as assigned.
  15. Participates and coordinates research efforts in clinical radiotherapy, as assigned.
  16. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Doctoral degree in Radiation Therapeutic Medical Physics or equivalent field/discipline; no prior experience. Certification/Licensure: American Board of Radiology (ABR) certification (or equivalent) as a Medical Physicist.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to provide technical guidance and leadership to professional personnel in area of expertise.
  • Advanced knowledge of radiation safety principles, methods, and procedures.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
  • Knowledge of radiation therapy methodologies, technologies, equipment, procedures, and standards.
  • Knowledge of the physical and operational characteristics of radiation equipment and facilities.
  • Knowledge of the nature and treatments of oncological diseases and of reactions and side effects.
  • Knowledge of dosimetry and dosage standards.
  • Ability to evaluate the progress of therapeutic programs and to make individual modifications.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of radiation safety and protection regulations as well as relevant local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
  • Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.
  • Ability to interact with students, faculty and/or staff in a team environment.
  • Knowledge of patient care charts and patient histories.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a teamwork environment.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Must maintain certification and/or licensure status.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
  • CPR Certified.
  • May be required to submit immunization records for review for required vaccines and TB testing.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work is performed in an interior medical/clinical environment.
  • Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of some average-weight objects up to 50 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
