Summary
Under general supervision, provides medical assessment and treatment services using established chiropractic medicine protocols, procedures, and techniques to specified non-emergency patient populations. Provides professional consultations and advice to faculty, staff, patients, and other healthcare providers and consumers as a specialized practitioner.
Duties and Responsibilities
Provides and manages direct patient care, including physical examinations, evaluations, assessments, diagnoses, and specialized chiropractic manipulation, procedures, and treatments for a specified patient population.
Prescribes herbal medications and other medication, devices, and treatment regimens as appropriate to assessed medical conditions.
Refers patients to specialists and to relevant patient care components as appropriate.
Performs a range of therapeutic exercises consistent with scope of practice and patient needs.
Orders appropriate diagnostic procedure(s) reasonably necessary to clinically correlate a physical examination to a diagnostic impression.
Provides patient counseling and education regarding physical, emotional, and spiritual balance in lifestyle.
Consults with primary care physicians, mental health therapists, and other healthcare providers in individual cases, as appropriate.
Obtains patient histories and develops patient care charts.
Provides health education to students, families, and/or community health practitioners and groups, within area of specialty.
Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops.
May perform clinical research related to specific operations.
May participate in planning programs and in developing specific health policies and procedures.
Follows established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives, continuous quality improvement objectives, and safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
Doctor of Chiropractic degree from a Council of Chiropractic Education-accredited (CCE) chiropractic school; at least 3 years of directly related post-licensure experience. Certification/Licensure: New Mexico Chiropractic Physician License, national board certification.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
Knowledge of current and emerging trends in technologies, techniques, issues, and approaches in area of expertise.
Advanced and in-depth knowledge of chiropractic medicine and associated principles, methods, procedures, and techniques.
Knowledge of patient care charts and patient histories.
Knowledge of patient care protocols, procedures, regulations, and standards.
Ability to investigate and analyze information and draw conclusions.
Ability to clearly communicate medical information to professional practitioners and/or the general public.
Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
Advanced, current knowledge of herbal medications and supplements and their indications, contraindications, dosing, side effects, and proper administration.
Knowledge of current principles, methods and procedures for the delivery of medical evaluation, diagnosis and treatment in area of expertise.
Ability to observe, assess, and record symptoms, reactions, and progress.
Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
Conditions of Employment
Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
May be subject to credentialing process; must maintain credentialed status, if applicable.
Must maintain certification status.
Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
Must maintain certification and/or licensure status.
Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
CPR Certified.
May be required to submit immunization records for review for required vaccines and TB testing.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Work is performed in an interior medical/clinical environment.
Occasional risk exposure to unusual elements such as toxic chemicals, biohazardous materials requiring awareness of safety precautions. May include the use of protective equipment.
Moderate physical activity. Requires exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Will work with blood or blood-borne pathogens and will require OSHA training.
The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
