Summary
Oversees and coordinates the day-to-day operation and administration of the University's automotive repair center, ensuring cost-efficient operations, excellent customer service, and compliance with all federal, state, and local laws and regulations and University policies. Oversees and coordinates the work of technical staff.
Duties and Responsibilities
Coordinates work assignments with technicians and outside repair facilities to ensure that repairs are completed in a timely fashion and deadlines are met; organizes workflow and shop priorities.
Oversees all facets of the daily admission operations of the organizational unit, ensuring compliance with the University, state, and federal laws, policies and regulations.
Supervises personnel which typically includes recommendations for hiring, dismissing, performance evaluation, training, work allocation, and problem resolution.
Writes up daily work orders and tracks technician efficiency; calculates billable labor times per work order; monitors shop productivity to ensure positive cash flow for automotive repair operations.
Coordinates with various University departments regarding repair estimates for fleet units damaged in an accident.
Develops operating goals and objectives for the unit; implements and administers methods and procedures to enhance operations, as appropriate to the unit.
Assists technicians with advanced automotive computer diagnostics, as well as diesel, gasoline, and compressed natural gas vehicular diagnosis and repair.
Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
High school diploma or GED; at least 1 year of supervisory experience AND 5 years of additional experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Certification/Licensure: Have a minimum of five(5) certifications (A, T, or L series) issued by the Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) or equivalent; Certified in areas required by city, state, and/or federal agencies (i.e., freon recovery, emission inspection).
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
Ability to plan, organize and coordinate the operations of an automotive repair and maintenance shop.
Knowledge of federal, state, and local codes and ordinances pertinent to automotive and maintenance area.
Knowledge of automotive repair and maintenance.
Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.

Conditions of Employment
Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
Possession of a valid New Mexico Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is a requirement for this job.
As a CDL driver, the employee will be required to comply with all provisions of DOT Regulation 49 CFR Parts 40 and 382, including random drug and alcohol testing.
Must maintain certification status.
Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of objects that can weigh up to 50 pounds (or greater mass that require mechanical assistance). Standing or walking may occur up to 40% of time.
Work is normally performed in an interior/office or workshop environment.
Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
