Summary

Installs and services locks and related hardware and electronic facilities access controls. Provides estimates on scope and cost and coordination of projects.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Installs, maintains, and repairs mechanical & electronic locks, hydraulic closing fixtures, and related hardware.
  2. Installs and/or oversees the installation, programming, and repair of electronic facilities access controls.
  3. Cuts new or duplicate keys, stamps, and maintains master key files and records of keys distributed, ensuring safety and security of materials and data.
  4. Adds and/or modifies electronic facilities access for the University community and contractors.
  5. Estimates scope and cost of projects in consultation with representatives of associated units.
  6. Maintains inventory of supplies and parts; maintains logs and records work performed and materials used in accordance with departmental standards.
  7. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  8. May oversee and coordinate the activities of sub-contractors in the completion of projects.
  9. May maintain and repair ADA door operators, door closers, and control gates.
  10. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Certification/Licensure: Certified Registered Locksmith (CRL) by Associated Locksmiths of America or completed Door & Hardware Technician (DHT) credential by the Door and Hardware Institute.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Advanced working knowledge of all facets of basic locksmithing.
  • Advanced working knowledge of electronic access control technology.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to trade.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative environment to work within the department, as well as with constituencies in other organizational units.
  • Ability to install, troubleshoot, and repair both mechanical locking and electronic access control devices.
  • Ability to manage and coordinate the work of technical consultants and/or contractors.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
  • Records maintenance skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position requires: a) assessment of scope, materials, and timeline to provide estimates to representatives of University units; b) coordination and/or oversight of the work of contractors; c) provision of reports to departmental leadership.

Conditions of Employment

  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Must maintain certification status.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
  • Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
