Summary

Diagnoses and repairs complex vehicle problems. Demonstrates techniques and provides leadership to other technicians in all aspects of automotive repairs.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Performs complex main engine, engine ignition, fuel system, and engine emission control system diagnosis and repair, to include repair of diesel, gas, and alternative fuel system configurations.
  2. Performs complex diagnosis and repair of automatic, standard, and electronic transmission mechanical and control systems, to include standard transmission clutch operating systems, transaxle and transfer case systems, and all phases of final drive operation.
  3. Performs complex diagnosis and repair of various types of supension, steering, power assist, and alignment systems; diagnoses and repairs various types of brake systems, to include hydraulic systems, disc and drum brake applications, air brake systems, and anti-lock brake systems operation.
  4. Performs complex general electrical and electronic system diagnosis and repair, to include starting and charging systems, electrical wiring systems, gauges and warning systems, and accessory systems; diagnoses and repairs ventilation systems, heat and air conditioning systems, refrigerant recovery, and mechanical systems.
  5. Performs all phases of maintenance required for fleet vehicles operation.
  6. Oversees scheduling and prioritizing of work orders as appropriate; assists in maintaining records of work performed.
  7. Leads lower level automotive technicians and helpers; prioritizes and assigns work.
  8. Assists and instructs automotive technicians with problematic assignments.
  9. Trains automotive technicians in proper repair procedures and techniques.
  10. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  11. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Certification/Licensure: Certified as Master Automotive Technician by Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) or equivalent; Certified in areas required by City, State, and/or Federal Agencies (i.e., Freon Recovery/Emission Inspection).
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to use automotive diagnostic equipment and hand and power tools.
  • Ability to lead assigned staff including prioritizing and scheduling work assignments.
  • Records maintenance skills.
  • Ability to diagnose, repair, and maintain automotive vehicles and various types of equipment, along with associated sub-systems.
  • Ability to test drive all vehicles repaired.
  • Ability to perform complex automotive vehicle and equipment maintenance and repairs.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Ability to provide technical training to automotive technicians.
  • Ability to train technicians in repair and/or maintenance techniques.
  • Skill in the use of computers, specifically in a PC, Windows-based operating environment.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Possession of a valid New Mexico Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is a requirement for this job.
  • As a CDL driver, the employee will be required to comply with all provisions of DOT Regulation 49 CFR Parts 40 and 382, including random drug and alcohol testing.
  • All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the CWA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • If this position is assigned to the Athletics Department, either administratively or functionally, compliance with all NCAA rules and regulations is required.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work involves considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of job.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
