Summary
Performs preventive maintenance and repairs utility plant equipment and systems to promote safe and efficient operation of gas and steam turbines, high-pressure boilers, refrigeration units, potable water systems, electricity production systems, and associated equipment. Works occasional 16-hour shifts as scheduled or otherwise required.
Duties and Responsibilities
Dismantles, moves, installs, or repairs machinery and mechanical equipment.
Examines machinery or mechanical equipment; identifies reasons for malfunction and completes repairs and/or maintenance.
Installs, repairs, and replaces piping and fittings for oil, natural gas, water, steam, compressed air, heating and plumbing lines, and systems for equipment such as gas and steam turbines, air and natural gas compressors, pumps, chillers and boilers.
Installs, repairs and overhauls industrial centrifugal absorption chillers, purge pumps, heat exchangers, coils, valves and associated equipment.
Tests, evaluates and repairs refrigeration units to maintain optimal operational performance. Monitors and maintains refrigerant charging levels.
Uses hand tools, power tools, and testing instruments to repair and maintain rotating and stationary machinery and equipment.
Cleans plant facilities, equipment, and work areas as required.
Prepares boilers, chillers and related equipment for state and insurance inspections.
Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
Follows established Federal, State, and University safety and environmental policies and procedures, and promotes adherence to these policies and procedures in the workplace.
Participates in development and uses a computerized maintenance management system.
Performs pressure tests on piping and pressure vessels to maintain safe and efficient operation.
Repairs and overhauls pumps and heat exchangers; removes and replaces coils, and replaces valves and associated equipment on gas and steam turbines, steam distribution systems, boilers, and other related systems and equipment.
Performs special program tasks, such as vibration analyses and/or oil analyses.
Assists with training and instruction of lower level technical staff.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
High school diploma or GED; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Certification/Licensure: Current New Mexico Journeyman's Certification/Licensure in two of the following disciplines: Plumbing (JP), Pipe Fitting (JPF), Gas (JG) or Refrigeration (JR). A Journeyman Plumber/Gas license (JPG) satisfies the requirement for two Journeyman Licenses.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
Ability to interpret technical manuals.
Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
Ability to repair, dismantle, install or move machinery and mechanical equipment.
Ability to work in elevated locations up to 75 feet.
Ability to physically enter boiler steam and water drums, boiler fireboxes and exhaust stacks, deaerating feedwater tanks, and other tight spaces.
Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to trade.
Ability to test systems and/or operations in compliance with published standards.
Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
Ability to perform preventive maintenance according to published guidelines.
Ability to accurately use rules, calipers, micrometers, and other related measuring tools.
Knowledge of maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment and systems.
Knowledge of inspecting and cleaning utility plant equipment.
Knowledge of computerized maintenance management principles as related to supplies, equipment, and/or services ordering and inventory control.
Ability to provide technical instruction in area of specialty.
Knowledge of pressure testing on piping and pressure vessels.
Knowledge in the operation and maintenance of industrial size centrifugal and absorption chillers.
Knowledge of Refrigerant systems that incorporate digital control systems and are linked to a multi-building, computer-based Energy Management and Control System (EMCS).
Distinguishing Characteristics
Position requires: a) independently inspecting parts and machinery or mechanical equipment, completing major repairs and/or maintenance; b) independently installing, repairing and replacing equipment, piping and fittings for various systems; c) performing pressure tests on piping and pressure vessels; d) installing complex new equipment and systems; e) assisting with training of lower level technical staff.
Conditions of Employment
Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the CWA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
Must maintain certification status.
Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
Must have Basic First Aid and Adult CPR/AED Certificates or obtain within 3 months of date of hire.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Extensive physical effort. Requires stair climbing; heavy lifting, handling, pushing or moving objects up to 50 lbs (or greater with the use of mechanical assistance). Constant standing/walking.
Work involves almost constant exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, toxic chemicals, biohazardous materials, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, and/or loud noises.
Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
