Summary

Troubleshoots and repairs electrical controls. Lays out and installs new electrical secondary service including panels, breakers, disconnects, and switches.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Dismantles electrical machinery and replaces defective electrical or mechanical parts such as brushes and armatures.
  2. Installs and maintains various types of motors, lighting fixtures, generators, circuit breakers, and transformers.
  3. Installs and monitors performance of installed electrical equipment for hazards, adjustments, or replacement.
  4. Installs grounding leads.
  5. Interprets blueprints; works from sketches or verbal instructions.
  6. Lays out, assembles, installs, tests, repairs, and adjusts electrical fixtures, apparatus, equipment, wiring, and new services to include panels, breakers, and conduit.
  7. Mounts motors, transformers, and lighting fixtures into position and completes circuits according to diagram specifications.
  8. Repairs, installs, replaces, and tests electrical circuits, equipment, and appliances using appropriate tools and testing instruments.
  9. Troubleshoots and repairs electric controls, motor control centers, and programmable logic controls.
  10. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 4 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Possession of a current New Mexico Journeyman Electrician's License,
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to isolate defects in wiring, switches, motors, and other electrical equipment.
  • Ability to install and maintain motors, lighting fixtures, generators, circuit breakers, and transformers.
  • Knowledge of electrical systems including planning additions or modifications on secondary circuits.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to trade.
  • Ability to install grounding leads.
  • Ability to read commercial electrical blueprints and apply NEC through the full range of commercial and industrial maintenance and construction work.
  • Ability to install and maintain motors, welding equipment, lighting fixtures, generators, circuit breakers, and transformers as appropriate to the position.
  • Ability to use appropriate tools and diagnostic equipment to repair, install, replace, and test electrical circuits, equipment and appliances.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair electrical controls, industrial motor control centers, and programmable logic controllers.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position requires: a) Diagnosing and repairing electrical controls, industrial motor contol centers and programmable logic controllers; b) Reading commercial electrical blueprints; c) Planning and installing new electric service including new panels, breakers and conduit; d) Performing inspections of electrical components and distribution controls; and e) Electrical Journeyman License; a second electrical license or a license in a related construction trade (EL-1J, EE-98, JS11), and OSHA certified for high voltage work.

Conditions of Employment

  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • CPR and First Aid certification must be obtained within 6 months of date of hire.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the CWA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work involves almost constant exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, toxic chemicals, biohazardous materials, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, and/or loud noises.
  • Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of job.
  • Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
