Summary

Performs or assists with the performance of routine to moderately complex repairs and maintenance on a variety of turf mechanical/electrical equipment, such as mowers, small engine machinery, and/or equipment common to landscape maintenance, such as blowers, string trimmers, and blade edgers. May perform duties autonomously in an outdoor environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Performs maintenance and repairs on small engines and drive trains, to include engine overhauls, engine failure diagnoses, ignition system diagnoses, and engine fault code diagnoses.
  2. Diagnoses, maintains, and repairs brake systems on relevant mechanical rolling equipment, to include complete brake system diagnoses and overhauls.
  3. Performs diagnosis and repair on all aspects of equipment transmission mechanical and electronic control systems, including failure diagnoses on automatic transmissions, and complete overhauls of both standard and automatic transmissions.
  4. Diagnoses and repairs ride control systems, as required.
  5. Diagnoses and repairs electrical/electronic system malfunctions.
  6. Performs maintenance and repairs on a range of associated electrical and/or mechanical equipment and rolling stock, as appropriate to the position.
  7. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  8. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to diagnose, repair, and maintain automotive vehicles and various types of equipment, along with associated sub-systems.
  • Ability to diagnose, repair, rebuild, and maintain a variety of small engines and specialized mechanical and/or electrical powered equipment.
  • Ability to repair and overhaul brake systems.
  • Ability to repair and overhaul automatic and standard transmissions.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair electrical and electronic systems on operating equipment and machinery.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Ability to use mechanical/electronic diagnostic equipment and hand and power tools.
  • Ability to use arc, mig, and oxyacetyline welding equipment.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the CWA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work involves considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • Extensive physical activity. Requires strenuous physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects over 50 pounds.
  • Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
