Summary

Performs maintenance and repairs on facility electrical systems components up to and including the secondary distribution panel.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Checks and replaces faulty switches, sockets, and other simple elements of electrical systems such as lighting fixtures, tubes, and ballasts.
  2. Connects wiring to fixtures and power equipment; splices wires as required.
  3. Inspects and tests electrical lighting, signal, communication, and power circuits.
  4. Isolates defects in wiring, switches, motors, and other electrical equipment.
  5. Measures, cuts, threads, and installs electrical conduit.
  6. Pulls wiring through conduit.
  7. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 2 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Possession of a current New Mexico Journeyman Electrician's License.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of low voltage electrical systems and basic wiring principles.
  • Ability to apply NEC standards.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to trade.
  • Ability to isolate defects in wiring, switches, motors, and other electrical equipment.
  • Ability to measure, cut, thread, pull, and install electrical conduit.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position requires: a) Performing maintenance on all facililty electrical system components up to and including the secondary distibution panel; b) Installing and repairing lighting, AC power distribution, switches, receptables, over current protection, conduit and wire; and c) Electrical Journeyman License.

Conditions of Employment

  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the CWA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • CPR and First Aid certification must be obtained within 6 months of date of hire.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work involves almost constant exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, toxic chemicals, biohazardous materials, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, and/or loud noises.
  • Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of job.
  • Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
