Summary

Supports University-wide engineering and maintenance activities involving new construction, maintenance, repair, and renewal of Electrical system operations. Ensures compliance with safety requirements, specifications, applicable code, and engineering standards. Serves as the Qualifying Party for all associated University licensing and permitting in the EE9J, EE98, EL1J, & EL1 classifications.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provides quality assurance and quality control oversight of all construction projects and maintenance activities involving electrical scope.
  2. Serves as the University's representative and liaison for communication with the State of New Mexico agencies and Construction Industries Division (CID) regarding permits, inspections, and code corrective actions related to electrical systems.
  3. Assists in expediting the State CID administrative processes for permit approval and obtainment.
  4. Monitors the condition of existing electrical systems, oversees hands-on troubleshooting, repair, retrofit, and maintenance, document deterioration, and prepares assessments for repairs.
  5. Ensures appropriate cross-functional collaboration and communication with electrical vendors and/or 3rd parties, while maintaining vendor relationships for electrical system operations.
  6. Serves as the University's primary subject matter expert for workplace electrical safety.
  7. Performs thorough reviews of design documents, submittals, and requests for information, among other items.
  8. Provides training to Facilities personnel and other cross-functional teams on electrical systems, equipment, procedures, and any changes.
  9. Promotes workplace environmental, safety, and hazard management best practices. Advises on preventive maintenance strategies with other UNM teams on establishing and ensuring preventative maintenance programs aligns with manufacturer's recommendations and NFPA 70B.
  10. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of electrical testing equipment.
  11. Provides schematic sketches for contract repair and alteration.
  12. Works with UNM Engineering and other electrical partners on gathering field information, load measurements, and performs power quality assessments.
  13. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 8 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Minimum Licensure Requirement with the State of New Mexico: EL1, EL1J, EE98, EE98J. Commercial Electrical Inspectors Certification through the International Code Council (ICC).
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to monitor and/or maintain quality control standards.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
  • Ability to perform inspections and/or approve installations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of operational standards and tolerances for applicable machinery/equipment.
  • Ability to clearly communicate the status of facility equipment, maintenance, and upgrade activities.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Knowledge of all federal, state, and local codes and ordinances pertinent to facilities planning, design, construction, and maintenance.
  • Ability to oversee plant construction and/or repair projects involving electrical scope.
  • Ability to make evaluative judgments.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate effectively.
  • Knowledge of preventive maintenance principles and procedures within area of specialty.
  • Knowledge of work hazards, safety practices, operating configurations, and lockout/tagout policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of various electrical and construction-related documents including drawings, specifications, schematics, and operations manuals.
  • Ability to model behaviors that reflect the University of New Mexico's core values.

Conditions of Employment

  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • CPR and First Aid certification must be obtained within 6 months of date of hire.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Must maintain certification and/or licensure status.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work involves almost constant exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, toxic chemicals, biohazardous materials, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, and/or loud noises.
  • Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of job.
  • Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
