Summary

Performs independent preventive maintenance and emergency repairs on plumbing and gas systems.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Maintains and repairs general plumbing components to include toilets, urinals, faucets, hose bibs, and drains.
  2. Installs, repairs, or replaces domestic hot and cold water lines.
  3. Repairs and replaces domestic hot water heat exchangers and water heaters.
  4. Repairs and replaces pneumatic steam valves, radiator valves, traps, and steam and condensate pipes.
  5. Repairs and replaces domestic hot water heat pumps, chilled water pumps, sump pumps, and sewage pumps.
  6. Installs, tests, and repairs all sizes of backflow prevention devices.
  7. Troubleshoots and repairs steam, water, and gas utility distribution systems.
  8. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  9. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 4 years of trades experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Possession of a current New Mexico Journeyman Plumber's License.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Plumbing installation, maintenance, and repair skills.
  • Ability to perform preventative maintenance according to published guidelines and New Mexico plumbing codes.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to trade.
  • Knowledge of steam, water, and natural gas distribution systems maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position requires: a) Troubleshooting and repairing utility distribution systems including heat exchangers, valves, PRVs, backflow, equipment room piping, building distribution systems, waste systems, and gas systems.

Conditions of Employment

  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the CWA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work involves almost constant exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, toxic chemicals, biohazardous materials, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, and/or loud noises.
  • Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of job.
  • Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
