Summary
Performs building interior and exterior repairs including concrete, wall framing, dry wall, brick, plaster, and flooring. Repairs or installs other structural materials, such as hardware, decks, suspended ceilings, doors, and windows.
Duties and Responsibilities
Repairs or installs wood or metal frame walls, doors, sheet rock, insulation, flooring, suspended ceilings, windows, foundations and finish concrete.
Repairs or installs other miscellaneous hardware including shelves and cabinets.
Places structural concrete such as plaza decks and sidewalks, and repairs spalls, cracks, and joints.
Repairs or constructs CMU or poured-in-place walls, retaining walls, and concrete block and brick walls and facades.
Repairs or installs exterior stucco finishes and plaster; replaces interior plaster finishes, floor tiles, and pavers.
Assists in roofing repairs and painting as required.
May participate in replacement of carpeting or other floor coverings.
Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
High school diploma or GED; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
Carpentry, building repair, and/or finish plaster and concrete skills.
Concrete installation and repair skills.
Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to trade.
Masonry repair and installation skills.
Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Position requires: a) assisting in the installation or repair of basic building structural elements, such as wood or metal wall frames and roofs, using standard methods and techniques; b) installation and/or repair of standard interior construction materials and finishes, such as sheetrock, plaster, insulation, flooring, suspended ceilings, and windows; c) placement and repair of basic structural concrete using standard methods and techniques; d) routine construction and/or repair of standard concrete walls and facades; e) working as a member of a construction crew under direct supervision of a superior.
Conditions of Employment
Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the CWA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Work involves considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of job.
Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
