Summary

Under general supervision, collects recyclable materials from designated areas throughout the campus. Responds to customer inquiries regarding recycling procedures and related issues.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Collects recyclable materials from designated areas throughout the institution according to established procedures and the New Mexico Solid Waste Act.
  2. Operates a variety of recycling equipment and vehicles such as baling machines, forklifts, and trucks.
  3. Ensures confidentiality of recycled materials from pick-up point through the end of recycling process.
  4. Answers questions and promotes the recycling program to employees; instructs employees on appropriate materials to place in containers.
  5. Watches flow of recycled materials and makes recommendations to number of bins provided, and frequency of pickups.
  6. Ensures care in the disposal of chemicals and/or medical materials that are improperly placed in recycle bins.
  7. Prepares newspapers and other materials for recycling.
  8. Ensures care in the proper handling and use of equipment and supplies.
  9. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 6 months of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of recycling policies, procedures, and the New Mexico Solid Waste Act.
  • Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of light equipment operation and/or maintenance.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.
  • Ability to communicate the recycling program effectively with University personnel.
  • Ability to lift and manipulate heavy objects.
  • Knowledge of disposal of hazardous materials.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position requires: a) Picking up of recycling materials throughout the University; b) operating recycling equipment and vehicles; and c) ensuring confidentiality of recycled materials.

Conditions of Employment

  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the CWA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work involves considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of job.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
