Summary

Under the direction of the UNM Health Sciences Center (HSC) Marketing and Communication Senior Director, oversees the University of New Mexico's HSC communication efforts by developing and implementing strategic communications plans and programs to support the institutional mission, goals, and priorities. Oversees media relations, public affairs, and internal and external communications to ensure a consistent and professional institutional image. Produces executive-level communications, supervises personnel, manages budgets, and evaluates program effectiveness. Advises senior leadership on media strategies and compliance reporting.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Designs comprehensive institutional communications plans and programs for the HSC, taking into consideration institutional image, message, positioning, mission, goals, priorities and accomplishments of the HSC.
  2. Maintains a strategic communication plan and program for the HSC, through which a consistent and appropriate content-based image is conveyed to a variety of audiences and which allows for sufficient flexibility to accommodate the diverse needs and activities of the University.
  3. Plans and develops comprehensive communication programs, to include media, public affairs, media relations, and news publications, in close collaboration with other institutional communications and/or public relations activities. Represents the HSC to local, regional, and national media organizations/representatives.
  4. Serves as Public Information Officer for the HSC. Represents the HSC in the Emergency Operations Center and maintains communication with the HSC community.
  5. Supervises personnel, which includes work allocation, training, and problem resolution; evaluates performance and makes recommendations for personnel actions; motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance.
  6. Establishes and implements short- and long-range organizational goals, objectives, strategic plans, policies, and operating procedures. Monitors and evaluates programmatic and operational effectiveness, and effects changes required for improvement.
  7. Coordinates and maintains the strategic approach for the various communication programs of the HSC, including media relations, community relations, and institutional publications.
  8. Participates in the development of annual budgets for the organization and performs periodic cost and productivity analyses.
  9. Provides periodic compliance reports to other senior leadership members and various committees.
  10. Advises the HSC EVP and members of the HSC Core Group on effective communication with the media and how to address issues which may arise through a media training program.
  11. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 7 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community, including executive management and medical staff leadership.
  • Media relations skills.
  • Ability to provide effective advice and counsel on strategic and/or critical communication issues and to exercise effective judgement.
  • Ability to utilize effectively content-based information regarding the university.
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws, regulations, and standards for the management and disclosure of public information.
  • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
  • Ability to develop, implement, and evaluate public opinion surveys and related data collection vehicles.
  • Knowledge of management principles and practices, including employee development and performance management skills.
  • Ability to supervise and train assigned staff including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Employee development and performance management skills; knowledge of staff hiring procedures.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the complexities of a Level 1 Trauma Center and a large, multifaceted research institution.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative environment and to work in a collegial fashion with peers in other organizational units.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging communication issues and trends applicable to educational institutions.

Conditions of Employment

  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • No or very limited physical effort required.

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
