Summary

Provides oversight, strategic direction, and daily leadership for the holistic well-being of student athletes and serves as a member of the executive leadership team. Oversees a coordinated and proactive approach to student-athlete physical health, behavioral and mental health, athletic performance, substance use education, and wellness initiatives. Supervises and integrates sports medicine, athletic training, behavioral health, strength and conditioning, and serves as a key liaison to team physicians and allied health professionals. Reports directly to the Director of Athletics.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Leads the department's health and performance staff, including athletic training, mental health, strength and conditioning, and medical consultants.
  2. Offers technical and medical guidance for the care and management of injured or ill student-athletes, including support during workouts, practices, and competitions.
  3. Oversees mental health services for student-athletes and ensures integration with campus and external mental health professionals.
  4. Supervises substance abuse prevention and intervention efforts and serves as the departmental lead on educational and accountability programs.
  5. Directs administrative operations related to purchasing, insurance, drug testing, pharmacy coordination, and other medical services.
  6. Collaborates with team physicians to ensure continuity of care, sound return-to-play protocols, and comprehensive medical oversight.
  7. Chairs the Wellness Intervention program team and ensures case coordination and follow-up support for student-athlete wellness needs.
  8. Assists in the design, revision, and implementation of departmental policies and procedures pertaining to health and performance.
  9. Supports the development and future integration of emerging units such as applied sports science and sports nutrition.
  10. Provides mentorship and clinical oversight to graduate assistants and student interns in athletic training and strength & conditioning.
  11. Develops and monitors annual budgets and resource planning in coordination with the Deputy AD,COO.
  12. Collaborates with coaches, sport administrators, and support units to align health and performance goals with team strategy.
  13. Ensures compliance with all laws, policies, rules, and regulations set forth by the Board of Regents, University, NCAA, Conference, state and federal laws, and other governing bodies/agencies.
  14. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 7 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Advanced understanding of student-athlete healthcare delivery, including athletic training, mental health, strength/conditioning, and sports medicine.
  • Demonstrated leadership in managing multidisciplinary health and performance teams in a collegiate athletics environment.
  • Familiarity with NCAA health and safety legislation, mental health standards, and drug testing policies.
  • Experience developing and executing health-related policies, procedures, and case management protocols.
  • Strong understanding of HIPAA, FERPA, and confidentiality in athletic and medical environments.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
  • Ability to represent the department with professionalism and authority in public, clinical, and academic settings.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Employee development and performance management skills.

Conditions of Employment

  • Employees in this job title are subject to the terms and conditions of an employment contract. Employment contracts are typically subject to review and renewal on an annual basis.
  • Compliance with all NCAA rules and regulations is required in this position.
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Must maintain State of New Mexico Athletic Trainers Practice Board License.
  • Must maintain certification from National Athletic Training Association Board of Certification.
  • CPR Certified.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
