Summary
Hosts National Public Radio (NPR) news programs and local broadcasts, delivering continuity elements, underwriting, promotions, and weather updates. Operates and engineers audio equipment for broadcasts. Produces and delivers newscasts and feature stories for broadcast and online publication by collecting and analyzing information, conducting interviews, and attending events. Combines advanced hosting and reporting responsibilities with leadership roles, including training, mentoring, and serving as an editorial resource for news staff.
Duties and Responsibilities
Hosts, produces, and engineers NPR news magazine shows, including guest interviews and screening calls for KUNM news programs
Pitches original and timely news stories by evaluating leads, tips, and assignments.
Gathers and verifies information through interviews, observation, and research. Explains complex subjects to a general audience, consistently breaking news and producing exclusive, in-depth enterprise reporting.
Demonstrates expertise in an assigned news beat, organizes material, determines story framing, and writes features, two-ways, spot news, and cut-and-copies in alignment with KUNM editorial standards.
Builds and maintains relationships with diverse sources, including public officials, administrators, researchers, and community leaders. Delivers live reports from event sites, mobile broadcast units, or in-studio as needed.
Compiles, writes, and prioritizes news stories from other outlets. Researches, writes, and delivers live weather reports. Oversees and anchors NPR live special coverage and may produce live coverage during major events, such as Election Nights.
Records and edits audio from both field and in-studio settings, mixes and files, pre-recorded broadcast-ready radio features, two-ways and spots, ensuring high-quality production.
Creates supplementary content, including photographs or video, to enhance stories. Develops digital and social media posts, expanding online stories into more in-depth coverage.
Provides training and mentorship to KUNM staff and student employees on hosting, audio equipment, scripting, content management systems, reporting, and interview techniques. Acts as an editorial resource and backup in the News Director's absence, including leading meetings and guiding reporters.
Troubleshoots technical issues with relevant staff, ensuring timely broadcasts and content delivery. Opens or closes the newsroom, monitors for security concerns, and notifies UNM personnel as necessary.
Participates in fundraisers through on-air pitching, production of pre-recorded content, or interviewing guest for news programs. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements
Bachelor's degree; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Conditions of Employment
Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
