Summary

Under general supervision, manages and coordinates all technical elements of stage production. Works closely with venue users to produce stage productions including lighting, sound, scenery and rigging; scheduling crew and facility requirements; provides accounting for performance expenses. Provides specialization in stage lighting, establishes policies and provides leadership, planning, training, maintains equipment inventory and provides long term planning for equipment purchases. Programs computer lighting consoles on multiple platforms; may execute complex technical production planning using CAD and lighting visualization programs.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Oversees and coordinates the staging of lighting, sound, video, and other equipment and assets, as required for individual performances.
  2. Trains and supervises all event stage crew personnel in technical and safety procedures for theater, equipment, and personnel.
  3. Prepares work schedules and assigns personnel to meet production plans.
  4. Provides individual and/or group instruction and training to contract labor, students, and staff on stage techniques and lighting computer technologies.
  5. Maintains a broad knowledge of state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and/or systems; participates in professional development activities as appropriate.
  6. Maintains inventories of relevant materials and equipment; identifies and assesses inventory requirements, and makes and/or recommends purchases, as appropriate.
  7. Prepares accounting summaries for settlements and other types of reports as required.
  8. Ensures adherence to established University and departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, and safety standards.
  9. Participates in implementation of organizational goals and strategic planning.
  10. Ensures communication between various disciplines backstage and all of the departments within the organization.
  11. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

  • Knowledge of current technological developments/trends in area of expertise.

  • Ability to plan work schedules and assign duties; ability to provide or arrange for training.
  • Knowledge of theater and/or events staging, sound and lighting and/or costume design procedures, techniques and facilities as appropriate to the position.
  • Knowledge of theatrical staging techniques, materials, equipment, and facilities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of digital stage production methods, processes and techniques
  • Knowledge of theatrical lighting techniques and equipment.
  • Ability to develop, plan, and implement short- and long-range goals.
  • Knowledge of organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work normally performed in professional theatre. Requires working in tight spaces, under low light levels and at heights. Exposure to electrical wires.
  • Moderate physical activity. Requires occasional lifting of up to 15 lbs. or transferring of objects up to 30 lbs, kneeling and reaching.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
