Summary

Under general supervision, plans, oversees, and coordinates the support of all local programming and contract productions for the University's television station, including creative talent and program production staff supervision; directing studio television programs; and production contract administration and negotiations.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Plans and coordinates all activities associated with the support of locally produced television programming; oversees and coordinates the disposition of creative talent and staff and/or contractors, broadcast facilities, and equipment.
  2. Leads and guides the work of lower level staff as appropriate. Supervises student employees; may participate in hiring decisions and performance appraisal.
  3. Administers TV and/or film production contracts. Develops, maintains, monitors, and analyzes overall production budgets and expenditures, as needed. Supports contract negotiations.
  4. Works with managers and producers in the planning, budgeting, and staffing of locally produced programs.
  5. Guides and trains production staff in the use and disposition of production equipment and facilities.
  6. Develops and maintains records on all use of production support staff, contracted personnel, facilities, equipment, and supplies for production projects, as required.
  7. Ensures that all material, either broadcast or produced, conforms to industry standards and FCC regulations.
  8. Manages television editing, to include computer based Non-Linear Editing systems, software and digital assets.
  9. May participate in the development of operating goals and objectives for the unit; may recommend, implement, and administer methods and procedures to enhance operations.
  10. May serve as Director of Photography; Studio Production Director; supervising lighting, talent, production crew and camera operations on television and film production.
  11. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the principles, methods, and procedures of regional and/or nationally produced television broadcasting.
  • Knowledge of FCC and other federal, state and local broadcasting regulations.
  • Skill in the use and disposition of television broadcasting facilities and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the practices, protocols, and conventions of the entertainment industry.
  • Knowledge of TV and film directing, staging, lighting, set design, and construction requirements.
  • Ability to manage and coordinate creative talent.
  • Knowledge of television field equipment, including digital and analog video cameras, studio and field lighting systems and equipment, and field audio equipment.
  • Skill in computer based non-linear television editing platforms.
  • Knowledge of digital asset formats, to include software manipulation, media storage, and display systems.
  • Ability to train and guide technical personnel.
  • Knowledge of TV audio and videography principles and techniques.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.

Conditions of Employment

  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
  • Work environment involves minimal exposure to physical risks, such as operating dangerous equipment or working with chemicals.
  • Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
