Summary
Oversees the daily operations, management, and staffing of an art laboratory assigned to a specific area of the Department of Art and Art History, such as ceramics, electronic art, photography, printmaking, and 3D. Ensures the smooth and efficient functioning of the laboratory and the safe use and maintenance of equipment and facilities.
Duties and Responsibilities
Oversees and manages day-to-day technical, educational, and research support activities conducted in the laboratory; contributes to planning and reviewing area's performance; resolves problems and issues as they arise.
Researches and recommends purchases and orders, installs and maintains equipment, materials and supplies used in classrooms and laboratories; develops and implements appropriate inventory control system including the maintenance of inventory database.
Works closely with faculty to assess classroom and instructional technology needs; develops solutions to support teaching goals of the laboratory.
Develops and conducts orientations for students and faculty on the proper use of equipment, materials, supplies and safety and security issues; may conduct training workshops on new technology specific to the lab.
Participates in development, implementation and maintenance of policies, objectives, short-and long-range planning; develops and implements projects and programs to assist in accomplishment of established goals.
Investigates emerging technologies and makes recommendations in support of teaching and learning initiatives; keeps abreast of technical developments in the field as they relate to the curriculum, technical processes, and materials and equipment including computer hardware and software.
Monitors and administers specific area's revenues and expenses and manages the allocated budget for each school semester; prepares internal reports for management.
Supervises student employees, which includes work allocation, training, and problem resolution; evaluates performance and makes recommendations for student personnel actions; motivates students to achieve peak productivity and performance.
Establishes and maintains policies regarding safe use of the facilities.
Provides technical guidance to students and faculty on use of equipment, materials, and supplies.
Responds to inquiries and researches and resolves problems related to transactions handled by the unit; serves as liaison with other constituencies in the resolution of day-to-day administrative and operational issues.
Performs routine and preventive maintenance and repair on laboratory equipment; ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment, materials, and supplies; performs periodic safety checks.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
Bachelor's degree in a directly related field; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Conditions of Employment
Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Work involves considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
Considerable physical effort. Requires handling of objects that can weigh up to 50 lbs (or greater mass requiring mechanical assistance). Standing/walking may occur more than 50% of time.
Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
