Summary
Under general supervision, provides lighting, sound, or rigging technical services for performances. Maintains and repairs lighting instruments, sound systems, projection equipment, or video recording systems. Serves as lead for crew personnel or contract crews, ensuring safe operation of equipment.
Duties and Responsibilities
Performs and/or oversees the staging and operation of lighting, sound, video, or other equipment and assets, as required for performances.
Trains, schedules, and supervises crew personnel and contractors in the set-up, operation, and take down of technical equipment and established safety procedures.
Maintains inventories of relevant materials and equipment; identifies and assesses inventory requirements, and makes and/or recommends purchases, as appropriate.
Performs or coordinates the troubleshooting and repair of theatrical technical equipment.
Collaborates with internal and external parties on the appropriate set-up and operation of equipment for performances.
Assists in the creation of protocols and technical troubleshooting processes and documentation.
Maintains a broad knowledge of state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and/or systems; participates in professional development activities as appropriate.
Ensures adherence to established University and departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, and safety standards.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
High school diploma or GED; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
Ability to monitor and/or maintain quality control standards.
Ability to plan work schedules and assign duties; ability to provide or arrange for training.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Knowledge of theatrical staging techniques, materials, equipment, and facilities.
Ability to operate, troubleshoot, and perform routine repairs on a range of equipment and facilities.
Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
Organizing and coordinating skills.
Ability to coordinate quality assurance programs in area of specialty.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Work normally performed in professional theatre. Requires working in tight spaces, under low light levels and at heights. Exposure to electrical wires.
Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of the job.
Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
May be required to perform work outside standard business hours and/or workweek.
Moderate physical activity; requires handling of average-weight objects and standing or walking for extended periods of time.
