The following statements are intended to describe, in broad terms, the general functions and responsibility levels characteristic of positions assigned to this classification. Summary

Under general supervision, designs electronic and printed materials, exhibit elements, and/or illustrations for a variety of university publications, displays, and other media.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Conceptualizes, designs, and produces curriculum, training, and/or promotional materials such as flyers, ads, brochures, logos, office signage, exhibits, and/or displays; writes and edits basic copy.
  2. Designs and produces camera-ready art including graphs, charts, clip art, posters, digitization of graphics, line-art, and/or photos.
  3. Creates electronically-designed page layouts and imports word processing files into page layouts, as appropriate to the position; may develop and produce web-based graphics, as requested.
  4. Produces technical and scientific illustrations for presentations and/or publication, as appropriate to the requirements of the position.
  5. Consults with faculty and staff to identify their graphics needs, budget constraints, and reasonable deadlines for the project; serves as a liaison between the client and printers/publishers.
  6. Coordinates the printing production process to ensure quality: writes printing and other reproduction specifications (selects ink, paper, and print quality); inspects proofs for accuracy; recommends contractors (typesetters, printers, illustrators, photographers, cartographers).
  7. May coordinate a graphics or photographic library and/or maintain digital records.
  8. May coordinate and lead the work of others.
  9. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of graphic design.
  • Ability to create and produce graphic materials using a range of media, methods, techniques, and equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of graphic layout and photographic requirements and procedures, including programming and operating reprographic equipment.
  • Skills in the utilization of specified computerized graphic design software and programs.
  • Ability to analyze graphic and technical information and create interpretive illustrations.
  • Knowledge of printing procedures and requirements.
  • Knowledge of printing and/or reproduction processes and techniques.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret user graphic requirements.
  • Ability to develop print and/or reproduction specifications.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position requires: a) Creating and designing printed materials, exhibit elements and/or illustrations; b) creating electronically designed page layouts; c) producing camera-ready art; d) consulting with faculty and staff to identify their graphic needs, including budget and project deadlines; and e) writing and editing basic copy in the completion of media projects.

Conditions of Employment

  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Light to Moderate physical effort which may require occasional lifting up to 40 pounds and/or some standing or walking.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
