Summary
Under general supervision, plans, schedules, and carries out the tuning, maintenance, and/or replacement of all pianos and harpsichords in the Department of Music. Typically works on an on-call basis, as required.
Duties and Responsibilities
Monitors the serviceability of all pianos, harpsichords, and related instruments in the department, and develops schedules for tuning and general maintenance, as required.
Performs all tuning and general maintenance of pianos and related instruments for the department.
Assesses and maintains inventories of the disposition, serviceability, and general condition of all pianos and related instruments, and plans for their long-term care and/or replacement, as appropriate.
Oversees and coordinates loan programs with local piano dealerships, as appropriate.
Oversees major rebuilding of pianos by outside firms.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
High school diploma or GED; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
Knowledge of planning and scheduling techniques.
Records maintenance skills.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ability to establish priorities and execute maintenance programs in an institutional environment.
Skills at the concert level in tuning, regulation, and voicing of pianos.
Skills in rebuilding pianos, to include restringing, pinblock replacement, and action block replacement.
Skill in maintaining and repairing harpsichords.
Knowledge of the needs of music students and faculty.
Knowledge of acceptable work standards in the rebuilding and maintenance of pianos and related instruments.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Extensive physical activity. Requires strenuous physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects over 50 pounds.
No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
