Summary

Under general supervision, promotes Tamarind and fine art lithography; manages all aspects of the Tamarind Institute professional studio. Collaborates with artists and prints editions; Supervises and teaches apprentice printers. Schedules press operations.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Collaborates with artists to produce original lithographs; supervises artist collaborations and printing in progress.
  2. Hand prints lithographic editions to the highest standards of quality.
  3. Schedules press time and maintains appropriate operational workload to achieve quality and timely production.
  4. Assigns projects to staff and oversees work in professional shop.
  5. Supervises and trains apprentice printers, teaching technical skills and the refinement of perceptions and judgments with regard to lithographic printing and collaborating.
  6. Trains apprentice printers on ordering supplies, maintaining proper inventory, and scheduling press work.
  7. Performs routine equipment and press maintenance.
  8. Participates with director in printer, student, and program evaluations; makes recommendations as appropriate.
  9. Travels nationally and internationally to promote lithography and Tamarind Institute, including lecturing and giving workshops and demonstrations.
  10. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 7 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Knowledge of supplies, equipment, and/or services ordering and inventory control.
  • Ability to effectively manage time and schedules.
  • Ability to monitor and/or maintain quality control standards.
  • Extensive knowledge of lithographic processes and techniques.
  • Knowledge of printing press operations and work flow.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees and students, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Ability to train apprentice printers in the principles, concepts, procedures and techniques of lithography.
  • Strong organizational and coordination skills.
  • Ability to operate and maintain lithographic presses and equipment.

Conditions of Employment

  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Moderate physical effort. May require occasional lifting, handling, pushing, or moving objects up to 50 lbs. Constant standing/walking.
  • Work environment involves minimal exposure to physical risks, such as operating dangerous equipment or working with chemicals.
  • Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
