Summary

Supports the day-to-day operations of one or more clinical, non-clinical, and/or investigative units of the Office of the Medical Investigator (OMI). Trains and supervises technical support staff engaged in OMI investigatory and related activities as directed.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Supervises personnel, which includes work allocation and training; evaluates performance and implements personnel actions; motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance.
  2. Provides technical direction, leadership, guidance, and support to subordinate staff.
  3. Monitors daily activities, ensuring quality and appropriateness. Reports and partners with departmental leadership on emerging issues/concerns and resolutions.
  4. Interfaces with internal and external customers to resolve problems and conflicts, as necessary.
  5. Ensures adherence to established University and departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, and safety standards.
  6. Participates in development, implementation and maintenance of internal procedures, objectives, short-and long-range planning; develops and implements projects and programs to assist in accomplishment of established goals.
  7. Provides trainings, observations, and other support to staff on-site and on-scene, as needed.
  8. Performs problem resolution and provides on-call support as needed.
  9. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Associate's degree; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to provide technical guidance and leadership.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Knowledge of medical/forensic investigation policies, procedures, methods, and standards.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Knowledge of all federal and state laws, regulations, guidelines, and standards pertaining to the conduct of forensic/medical investigations.
  • Employee development and performance management skills.
  • Ability to work variable hours, to include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.

Conditions of Employment

  • May be required to submit immunization records for review for required vaccines and TB testing.
  • UNM will provide Hepatitis vaccination, candidate may decline vaccination through declination form or may provide record of vaccination from previous employer.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • Ability to secure and maintain a valid UNM Driver's License.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work involves almost constant exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, toxic chemicals, biohazardous materials, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, and/or loud noises.
  • Extensive physical activity. Requires strenuous physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects over 50 pounds.
  • Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
  • Will work in a death environment with occasional noxious odors.
  • Will work with blood or blood-borne pathogens and will require OSHA training.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
