Summary
Under direct supervision, oversees and leads an archaeological crew during archaeological surveys and excavation projects. Oversees the collection, recording, and interpretation of archaeological data in the field, and coordinates laboratory processing and analysis activities. Assists in the preparation of final descriptive, analytical, and technical reports for publication, and contributes chapters to technical reports.
Duties and Responsibilities
Oversees and coordinates an archaeological field crew in locating, collecting, recording and interpreting data for archaeology survey and excavation projects; conveys client needs and project objectives to assigned crew members
Collects and records archaeological data, artifacts, and materials for subsequent analysis and interpretation.
Coordinates and oversees laboratory-processing activities, to include cleaning, reconstruction, classification, and cataloguing of artifacts.
Provides functional guidance and leadership to technical staff in areas of specialty, such as faunal, lithic, and/or ceramic analysis.
Participates in direct research and analysis in one or more areas of archaeological specialty.
Assists with writing and/or co-authoring archaeological survey, excavation, and analysis reports for publication.
Ensures the application of safe work practices by crew members during survey/excavation projects.
Ensures timely completion of fieldwork and project reports.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, equivalent discipline; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
Ability to use computers for data entry and word processing.
Ability to develop and follow research methodology and protocol.
Knowledge of basic archaeological field and laboratory procedures, to include mapping, photography, and collection and handling of artifacts.
Knowledge of surveying and mapping equipment.
Knowledge of archaeological research issues, principles and procedures.
Knowledge of federal/state laws, regulations, policies, and procedures for the preservation and management of historic/cultural resources.
Knowledge of archaeological reconstruction, classification, and cataloging principles, protocols, procedures, and techniques.
Knowledge and expertise in one or more fields of archaeological specialty.
Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
Knowledge of scientific data analysis applications and programs.
Ability to create, compose, and edit written materials.
Knowledge of safe operating procedures, regulations, and standards appropriate to archaeological work sites.
Skill in backpacking and primitive camping.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Position requires: a) oversight and coordination of a single archaeological crew for survey and excavation projects; b) use of specialized knowledge to direct technical staff; c) participation in archaeological research and authoring of technical reports.
Conditions of Employment
Possession of a valid United States driver's license is a requirement for this job.
Successful candidate must be able to meet minimum requirements for Local/State/Federal Archaeological permits.
Successful candidate must submit to a post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of job.
Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
Work requires hiking in rugged terrain with elevation changes of more than 1000 feet.
The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
