Summary

Plans and manages integrated research programs within a specifically defined field of health sciences study. Develops investigative directions, concepts, and methods within study parameters, and participates in the reporting, authoring, and presentation of research findings. Oversees project fiscal and human resources administration.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Interprets, organizes, executes, and manages integrated research programs, in accordance with the overall objectives and parameters established by the faculty Principal Investigator and/or the research grant or contract.
  2. Utilizes advanced and broad knowledge of subject matter and scientific methods to explore and define scope and focus of problems for investigation, develop research model concepts, and establish study methods, protocols, and procedures.
  3. Directly participates in the development and authoring of study reports, presentations, and manuscripts.
  4. Oversees and coordinates the day-to-day activities of technical and support staff, to include work allocation, training, and problem resolution; motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance.
  5. Participates in the identification and development of research funding sources, as appropriate, and oversees project administration, to include fiscal management.
  6. May serve in the capacity of principal or co-principal investigator on specified research assignments, as appropriate to overall study objectives.
  7. May serve as a member of adjunct faculty in accordance with the provisions of a letter of academic title.
  8. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Doctorate degree; at least 1 year of post-doctorate experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of a specified field of scientific study.
  • Ability to resolve conflict and to manage personnel and resources.
  • Ability to develop scientific reports and manuscripts based on original research.
  • Ability to define, organize, manage, and evaluate integrated research studies within field of scientific expertise.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of scientific method.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Administrative planning skills.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present effectively to small and large groups.
  • Knowledge of budget preparation and fiscal management.

Conditions of Employment

  • For individual positions in which driving is a job requirement, a valid NM driver's license and valid UNM driver's permit will be required.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work may, on occasion, involve exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • Moderate physical activity. May require physical effort including lifting up to 25 pounds and some extended periods of standing or walking.
  • Work may on occasion involve exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that may require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
