Summary

Participates as a member of an archaeology crew in locating, collecting, recording, and interpreting archaeological data during the survey, testing, and excavation phases of an archaeology project.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Performs systematic observation and documentation of possible archaeological field sites using established mapping techniques and field methods.
2. Interprets data using topographic maps and aerial photographs; establishes site boundaries by walking through areas and using surveying and Global Positioning System (GPS) instruments.
3. Excavates archaeological sites using shovels, buckets, and other digging tools; documents soil profiles and records relevant features by describing, drawing, photographing and using other appropriate means; packs and transports artifacts such as rocks, bones, and soil samples; completes field data forms.
4. May participate in archaeological laboratory activities such as recordkeeping and soil sample processing; cleans, counts, and catalogues artifacts, as needed.
5. May oversee the activities of archaeological assistants on a per-task basis.
6. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or other relevant field; completion of a field school.
• Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

• Ability to collect field data and accurately record findings.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Knowledge of mapping principles and techniques.
• Ability to read and interpret topographic maps and aerial photographs.
• Ability to utilize geographic survey instruments.
• Knowledge of general excavation, techniques, tools, and equipment.
• Knowledge of archaeological field and/or laboratory procedures and techniques.
• Skill in backpacking and primitive camping.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Position requires: a) observation, documentation and mapping of archaeological field sites; b) interpretation of maps, photos, surveying equipment and GPS to establish site boundaries; c) excavation of archaeological sites, to include documentation of soil profiles, transportation of artifacts, and completion of standard reports.

Conditions of Employment

• Possession of a valid United States driver's license is a requirement for this job.
• Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

• Work involves almost constant exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, toxic chemicals, biohazardous materials, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, and/or loud noises.
• Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of job.
• Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
• Work requires hiking in rugged terrain with elevation changes of more than 1000 feet.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
