The following statements are intended to describe, in broad terms, the general functions and responsibility levels characteristic of positions assigned to this classification. Summary

Oversees and coordinates the implementation and operation of a specified recreational activities program, or a closely associated group of programs, designed for faculty, staff, students, and/or members of the general public. Coordinates programming, logistics, facilities and/or equipment, budgeting, and administration for the program. Oversees and administers activity leaders, support staff, and/or student employees and volunteers, as appropriate.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Plans, organizes, and oversees the implementation of all facets of a specified recreational program or set of programs, ensuring compliance with operational and policy requirements, and with appropriate federal, state, and local regulations, guidelines, and standards.
  2. Coordinates, schedules, and monitors the operation and maintenance of recreational facilities and/or equipment utilized in program activities; implements risk management policies and procedures.
  3. Guides, coordinates, and assists clients engaged in recreational activities regarding program policies and provisions, activity procedures and techniques, and facilities and equipment usage.
  4. Prepares and disseminates educational and informational materials relevant to specified program activities.
  5. Hires, trains, evaluates, and supervises student recreational employees engaged in program activities.
  6. Maintains inventories of relevant materials and equipment; identifies and assesses inventory requirements, and makes and/or recommends purchases, as appropriate.
  7. Assists in the annual budget planning process and regularly monitors expenditures.
  8. Coordinates the scheduling of program activities, and makes decisions regarding postponements, cancellations, and/or other changes.
  9. Collects and analyzes data and statistical information pertaining to program activities, and prepares periodic and ad hoc reports; maintains a database management system.
  10. Serves as a liaison between students, faculty, staff, and other organizations within the community in relation to program and associated activities; facilitates seminars, meetings, special projects, and workshops, as appropriate.
  11. Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act.
  12. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of supplies, equipment, and/or services ordering and inventory control.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Skill in budget preparation and fiscal management.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of recreational principles and objectives.
  • Database management skills.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, methods, and techniques in area of specialty.
  • Ability to operate and maintain recreational equipment and facilities in area of specialty.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Ability to recruit, train, supervise and motivate on-call and/or student employees and/or volunteers.

Conditions of Employment

  • All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the US-UNM Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
  • Work environment involves minimal exposure to physical risks, such as operating dangerous equipment or working with chemicals.
  • Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
