Summary

Directs and oversees all operational, administrative, and programmatic aspects of the UNM Art Museum and Jonson Gallery.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Establishes and implements short- and long-range organizational goals, objectives, strategic plans, policies, and operating procedures; monitors and evaluates programmatic and operational effectiveness, and effects changes required for improvement.
  2. Designs, establishes, and maintains an organizational structure and staffing to effectively accomplish the organization's goals and objectives; oversees recruitment, training, supervision, and evaluation of unit staff.
  3. Plans, develops, and implements strategies for generating resources and/or revenues for the organization.
  4. Develops and manages annual budgets for the organization and performs periodic cost and productivity analyses.
  5. Coordinates staff participation in Museum Studies program and other interdepartmental educational activities.
  6. Directs and oversees the acquisition and professional management of a wide range of art objects; directs and oversees accessioning, deaccessioning, preservation, research, and other related professional activities.
  7. Oversees and coordinates a wide variety of temporary exhibitions and permanent collection installations; directs and guides all aspects of research interpretation, cataloging, and presentation related to the establishment of exhibitions.
  8. Plans, coordinates, and oversees the unit's public affairs and oversees communications efforts, to include public relations, community outreach, and internal publications and communications, as appropriate.
  9. Represents the art museums through leadership on various UNM and/or other committees; sits on teaching and thesis/dissertation committees, as appropriate.
  10. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Master's degree; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Knowledge and understanding of all aspects of art appreciation and art history.

  • Knowledge and understanding of a wide range of art formats, disciplines, techniques, and media.
  • Employee development and performance management skills.
  • Knowledge of financial/business analysis techniques.
  • Knowledge of art acquisition and management principles, methods, procedures, and standards.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate temporary and permanent art exhibitions.
  • Knowledge of faculty and/or staff hiring procedures.

Conditions of Employment

  • Employees in this job title are subject to the terms and conditions of an employment contract. Employment contracts are typically subject to review and renewal on an annual basis.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
