Summary

Oversees the operations of one or more specialized library services or areas that serve a wide range of customers and is a key component of library or campus infrastructure. Performs a range of complex and specialized library tasks requiring a high level of professional expertise and customer service skills. Monitors and oversees daily operations and participates in the development of unit operating policies and procedures, systems to maintain unit records, and unit quality standards.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Oversees, coordinates, and/or performs complex integrated activities of a specialized library service or area; plans, organizes, and implements the provision of services.
  2. Reviews, evaluates, analyzes and makes recommendations for service improvements and implementation.
  3. Creates or participates in the development and implementation of policies and procedures.
  4. Implements and maintains service quality and productivity standards.
  5. Responsible for project management in specialized library service or area; develops and establishes deadlines, goals, objectives, workflow, and operational procedures.
  6. Monitors and oversees daily operations.
  7. Responsible for complex problem-solving by working with other library departments, vendors and other entities outside the library.
  8. May maintain records, equipment inventories, compliance activities, and collection usage statistics
  9. May provide training, instruction, liaison services and/or consultation to customers, including students, staff, or faculty in the use of specialized services
  10. May oversee building security and facilities management.
  11. May hire, supervise and train lower level staff, student employees, volunteers, and/or interns, as appropriate.
  12. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 4 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

  • Skill in the use of computer with Windows-based operating environment.
  • Ability to assess objectives and operational requirements and to develop and implement suitable operational policies and/or procedures.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Ability to plan, organize and oversee the operations of a specialized library service or area.
  • Ability to develop, plan, and implement short- and long-range goals.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures.
  • Ability to create, compose, and edit written materials.
  • Skill in the use of relevant database and/or integrated library systems.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Ability to provide information to library customers in area of expertise.
  • Ability to coordinate quality assurance programs in area of specialty.
  • Knowledge of library principles, practices, and terminology.
  • Ability to make complex operating, and procedural decisions.
  • Project management skills and the ability to resolve complex problems and issues.
  • Maintains professional knowledge base and skills through continued education and/or research.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position requires: a) Performs complex and specialized service activities in a specific area of subject expertise; b) performs complex integrated activities of a specialty library service; c) plans and implements special projects; d) oversee daily operations; e) possess a high level of professional expertise; and e) provides analysis and evaluation of specialized service activities.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Considerable physical activity. May require handling of objects that can weigh up to 50 lbs.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
