Summary

Provides academic tutoring services to a wide variety of individuals and groups. Leads and coordinates the activities of peer and professional tutors, and participates in the overall administration of the tutoring program for the unit. Creates and/or guides and oversees the creation and implementation of tutorial programs that guide and assist students with homework, problem solving, report writing, and test preparation.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Tutors students individually or in scheduled group study sessions to review principles, solve problems, and review for tests.
  2. Administers testing instruments and writes individual tutoring plans upon review of textbooks; refers students to other agencies as appropriate.
  3. Guides and coordinates the daily activities of peer and/or professional tutors, in line with specified program goals and operating requirements; develops instructional curriculum and coordinates tutor training sessions, in accordance with tutor certification guidelines.
  4. Facilitates reading and writing labs to develop writing, math, word processing, study, and other academic skills.
  5. Maintains and updates confidential files and records, ensuring that ethical and legal guidelines are maintained.
  6. Researches and selects learning materials, textbooks, software, and equipment to facilitate tutoring; may design specific handout, study, and related materials.
  7. Participates in the overall administration of the tutoring program, to include assistance with budget preparation, provision of input into operating policies and procedures, and participation in performance evaluation of tutorial staff.
  8. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Successful completion of at least 60 college-level credit hours; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

  • Knowledge of College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) tutor certification guidelines and standards.
  • Organizing and coordinating skills.
  • Basic data entry and/or word processing skills.
  • Knowledge of tutorial/learning materials and instructional aids.
  • Knowledge of peer counseling/tutoring processes and methods.
  • Skill in preparing instructional aids and plans.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position requires: A) provision of basic to advanced individual and/or group coaching, guidance, and assistance to students in the review of course material, solving of problems, and preparation for tests and examinations; B) guidance and coordination of the daily professional activities of other tutors; C) coordination of tutor training sessions, including development of instructional curriculum, in accordance with established guidelines; D) program administration and assistance with budgeting and policy/procedure development; E) participation in tutor performance evaluation.

Conditions of Employment

  • All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the US-UNM Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Light physical effort. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 10 pounds or some standing or walking. Effort applies to no more than two (2) hours per day.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
