Summary

Under indirect supervision, plans and leads a range of individualized exercise/activity sessions for clients in a fitness specialty area.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Administers and evaluates client health history questionnaires and physiological data to determine appropriate individual exercise/activity regimens; maintains the confidentiality of health information disclosed by clients.
  2. Plans and implements individualized exercise/activity programs and cross-training programs for clients.
  3. Determines format and content of exercise/activity program based on individual client needs.
  4. Independently demonstrates and instructs clients on proper technique in standard and specialized exercise areas.
  5. Sets up and monitors training equipment; ensures equipment is returned in serviceable condition.
  6. Advises participants on program and class policies and procedures, as appropriate.
  7. Assists in peforming follow-up and communication with participants, as required.
  8. Tracks client progress and maintains complete and accurate client files.
  9. Ensures client adherence to safety and injury prevention policies and procedures; prepares accident reports as required.
  10. May provide individual guidance and backup support to lower level trainers as required.
  11. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Certification/Licensure CPR Certified; National certification in personal training (ISSA, ACE, ACSM or NSCA), or equivalent.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Working knowledge of physical training principles, methods, and techniques within a specified area of exercise science.
  • Records maintenance skills.
  • Working knowledge of one or more specialty knowledge-based training areas, such as PNF stretching and/or sports performance.
  • Ability to administer client health history questionnaires and interpret physical assessment data.
  • Ability to provide cross-training in various physical exercise areas.
  • Ability to independently plan and implement individual exercise/activity programs.
  • Ability to provide expert demonstration and instruction in general and specialized exercise techniques.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Ability to set up, calibrate, and maintain sophisticated exercise equipment.
  • Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel.
  • Manage confidential information.

Conditions of Employment

  • CPR Certified.
  • Must obtain requisite certification within 30 days of employment and maintain certification status.
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Moderate physical activity. Requires occasional handling of items up to 100 pounds.
  • Work environment involves minimal exposure to physical risks, such as operating dangerous equipment or working with chemicals.
  • Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
