Summary

Prepares chemicals, lab equipment, and student drawers for teaching lab. Maintains laboratory facilities and stockroom for experiments. Plans laboratory exercises with faculty. Tests and conducts experiments, exercises, and demonstrations. Provides technical assistance to staff and teaching assistants concerning experimental preparations and procedures. Ensures compliance with health and safety standards of laboratory operations.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Prepares adequate quantity and quality of chemicals for experiments in a timely manner.
2. Prepares, issues and replaces laboratory equipment.
3. Installs, maintains, and issues student drawers.
4. Responds to technical questions, questions related to stock solutions, and use of equipment to staff and teaching assistants.
5. Maintains supplies and equipment inventories; orders supplies and equipment for laboratory; keeps stockroom organized.
6. Maintains teaching equipment and instruments to ensure accuracy and efficient performance.
7. Serves as safety officer for teaching laboratory; stays in lab to oversee safety during scheduled teaching time.
8. Plans support of laboratory experiments, ensuring adherence to protocols and safety regulations; assists in troubleshooting and correcting experimental errors.
9. Develops quality standards and programs; maintains quality of stockroom, safety, and environmental regulations, and other applicable requirements.
10. Maintains student breakage card records and submits list of charges and refunds each semester.
11. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

• High school diploma or GED; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
• Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

• Ability to prepare stock chemicals according to given standards.

• Knowledge of laboratory and experimental protocols and procedures.
• Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
• Ability to provide technical guidance and training to end users.
• Ability to investigate and analyze information and draw conclusions.
• Knowledge of teaching laboratory materials receiving and storage procedures.
• Ability to utilize, calibrate, configure and/or troubleshoot laboratory equipment and instruments.
• Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
• Knowledge of laboratory operations and/or procedures.
• Knowledge of chemical, hazardous waste, industrial hygiene, and/or environmental health standards.
• Ability to enforce laboratory safety.
• Ability to maintain records and perform basic mathematical calculations.

Conditions of Employment

• Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

• Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
• Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
• Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
• Work may require flexible work hours extending into the evening depending on teaching needs and/or on weekends.
