Summary

Under general supervision, plans, develops, and oversees the implementation of a range of educational programs and exhibits on behalf of a University museum. Develops and coordinates a wide variety of programs and activities in support of learning and engagement.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Researches, develops, prepares, and implements museum education programs and events for a variety of groups and settings.
  2. In collaboration with campus partners, plans educational and innovative collections/exhibition-based curriculum that will enhance learning and engagement relevant to the University curriculum.
  3. Curates and displays exhibitions that encourages and facilitates meaningful participation, in accordance with accepted procedures.
  4. Recruits, trains, coordinates, and supervises volunteer teachers, interns, project staff, and/or students for educational program activities.
  5. Develops and prepares informational and promotional materials for educational exhibits and related initiatives.
  6. Serves as an educational liaison for the museum on issues between the University, schools, general public and external organizations and agencies.
  7. Provides input into general museum planning and development; participates as a senior member of museum planning committees.
  8. In coordination with the Director, develops and manages departmental budgets.
  9. Solicits and secures funds for educational initiatives; writes and prepares grant proposals and participates in community projects and activities.
  10. Maintains database records and files to track and report programs and initiatives to measure participation and impact.
  11. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of a range of museum display methods, procedures, techniques, and equipment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to develop, plan, prioritize and implement short-and long-range goals, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate media activities and special events.
  • Ability to develop project budgets and projections.
  • Database management skills.
  • Knowledge and understanding of current and historic museum principles, objectives, and practices.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart information to a range of clientele and/or media sources.
  • Knowledge of safe handling methods, procedures, and techniques for museum artifacts and equipment.
  • Ability to create, compose, and edit written materials.
  • Proposal and grant writing skills.
  • Ability to develop and present educational programs and/or workshops.
  • Ability to recruit, train, supervise, and motivate volunteers within area of specialty.

Conditions of Employment

  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
