Summary
Under general supervision, assists in the planning, preparation, design, and installation of museum exhibits, art collections, or other display materials. Designs and constructs display materials as required. Coordinates the packing, moving, maintenance, and security of collections. May assist with the planning and preparation of printed promotional materials.
Duties and Responsibilities
Assists collection manager, curator, or director in the planning, design, installation, and deinstallation of art, science, or other exhibits for public display.
Designs and constructs crates, display cases, and related items as required.
Packs, moves, and maintains collections; researches and implements storage and display methods.
Oversees collection security, ensuring proper installation of security systems and patron control.
Maintains appropriate collection documentation as required.
May provide graphic design for exhibits; may participate in design and composition of publicity releases, flyers, newsletters, catalogues, and other items related to exhibition publicity.
May lead, guide, and train staff/student employees, interns, and/or volunteers performing related work; may participate in the recruitment of volunteers, as appropriate to the area of operation.
May curate exhibitions as required.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
High school diploma or GED; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
Skill in art handling and crating, carpentry and fabrication, and/or exhibit preparation
Records maintenance skills.
Ability to package products for shipping/delivery.
Knowledge of art storage and display methods, techniques, and procedures.
Knowledge of art/museum security systems and procedures.
Conditions of Employment
Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of objects that can weigh up to 50 pounds (or greater mass that require mechanical assistance). Standing or walking may occur up to 40% of time.
Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
Work may be performed in an office, museum, or field environment.
The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
