Summary
Organizes and coordinates assigned programs and services that facilitate a supportive institutional approach to develop the whole student across the UNM student population. Provides leadership and administration for all units within the Dean of Student's Office. Reports to the Vice President for Student Affairs and is actively involved as a key member of the Student Affairs executive team. Directs and oversees a wide variety of programs that serve a diverse student population comprised of all enrolled undergraduate students as well as graduate students on the Albuquerque central campus, while working closely with student services on branch campuses, Health Sciences Campus, and the School of Law, student rights and responsibilities, Stewards student resources and advocacy processes, student accommodations, and campus safety programs. Directs and coordinates personal services and programs related to the university's student development and academic success efforts. Sets the strategic direction for the Dean of Students' programming and makes recommendations on related policies. Works in close collaboration with Academic Affairs, main and branch campuses, and the community.
Duties and Responsibilities
Provides leadership and direction in the strategic supervision and management of the Dean of Students Office; oversees the activities, operations, communication, and fiscal integrity of all programs administered by the Office.
Provides supervision for director-level staff administering complex, student-oriented service units.
Provides guidance, expertise, and management on matters related to the student code of conduct, student rights and responsibilities, the process of adjudication, and alternative dispute resolution.
Engages in unit, division, and university strategic planning efforts and participates in programs and processes intended to improve student support and the student experience; represents student safety and wellness needs to university leaders and stakeholders.
Works closely with students to identify needs and implement potential solutions to individual and community level issues.
Establishes and implements short- and long-range department goals, objectives, policies, budgets and operating procedures.
Oversees and performs department/program assessments and evaluations to determine effectiveness, and implements corrective action as required for improvement.
Ensures services offered are effective, cohesive, and consistent with the needs and objectives of the diverse student population.
Designs, establishes, and maintains staffing and an organizational structure to effectively accomplish the department function; recruits, employs, trains, supervises, and evaluates department staff.
Develops key collaborative relationships with campus administrative areas, faculty, and campus and community leaders to enhance planning and implementing strategic initiatives, resolving issues and providing support to students and the community when incidents and urgent matters arise.
Provides direction, intervention, and prevention for students in need including intervening in collaboration with mental health staff, providing student advocacy, and working with staff and students affected by the crisis; serves in an on-call capacity; identifies and implements interventions in the best interest of students and the university community.
Engages with empirical research and established best practices to collaborate on the design and advancement of a high-quality and equitable student experience at the university.
Provides training and information to students, faculty, staff, parents, and external stakeholders regarding student wellbeing, resources, rights, responsibilities, and overall experience.
Recommends and participates in the development of university policies and procedures; serves on university planning and policy-making committees.
Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
Master's degree; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
