Summary

Responsible for all aspects of the University's various undergraduate and graduate student housing services, residence life programming, and associated on- and off-campus facilities. Develops and implements strategic plans, and monitors fiscal resources. Acts as a liaison between the public, external agencies, internal departments, and student populations. Manages a wide range of staff and student employees.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Directs and oversees the day-to-day management, maintenance, and administration of the University's various on-and off-campus student, family, and graduate housing facilities; serves as primary campus liaison to third-party partner housing providers.
  2. Establishes and implements short- and long-range organizational goals, objectives, strategic plans, policies, and operating procedures; monitors and evaluates programmatic and operational effectiveness, and effects changes required for improvement.
  3. Directs and oversees all fiscal resources associated with housing program. Responsible for management of multi-year budgetary strategies, to include major capital improvements and investments.
  4. Represents the University to various institutional divisions as well as externally to media, government agencies, funding agencies, students, and/or the general public/local community.
  5. Participates in programs and processes intended to improve the residential student experience; represents residential student needs to university leaders and stakeholders.
  6. Designs, establishes, and maintains an organizational structure and staffing to effectively accomplish the organization's goals and objectives; oversees recruitment, training, supervision, and evaluation of unit staff.
  7. Oversees student residence programs that maintain and enhance the quality of on-campus residence life; directs Residence Education staff and student Resident Advisors, and develops and/or monitors educational, recreational, and/or social programs and services for student residents.
  8. Develops and directs department activities in the areas of crisis management, mediation, dispute resolution, and/or student discipline.
  9. Develops and directs emergency management planning, policies, and protocols for student housing residents with campus stakeholders.
  10. Reviews student resident appeals of decisions made by Residence Education staff, including contract terminations.
  11. Recommends and participates in the development of University policies and procedures; may serve on University planning and policy-making committees.
  12. Guides and collaborates with campus partners for marketing/communication.
  13. Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act.
  14. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 7 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Knowledge of student support programs and services.
  • Ability to identify and secure alternative funding/revenue sources.
  • Knowledge and understanding of all laws, regulations, standards and conventions associated with the operation of a large-scale student residential program.
  • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees; to include analysis techniques, organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Experience and knowledge of building and facilities maintenance, safety and security.
  • Ability to establish and direct crisis management services, activities, and procedures for distressed students.
  • Conflict resolution and/or mediation skills.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Skill in budget preparation, fiscal management and financial forecasting.
  • Employee development and performance management skills.
  • Ability to plan and design, construct and renovate Student Housing facilities.
  • Demonstrated leadership, organizational, and management skills.
  • Skill in establishing, directing and enforcing policies and regulations which pertain to campus life and to student development.

Conditions of Employment

  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • Employees in this job title are subject to the terms and conditions of an employment contract. Employment contracts are typically subject to review and renewal on an annual basis.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • No or very limited physical effort required.

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
