Summary

Directs and administers all aspects of the career services office to include management of staff, budget, and day-to-day administration. Assist all students, faculty, staff, and employers in the development of career education, career identification, career decision-making, and the pursuit of employment opportunities. Oversees the clinical supervision of career counselors. Provides short- and long-range program planning and marketing of services. Plans, organizes, implements, and evaluates career services programs to prepare students for internship and employment opportunities. Develops and collaborates with UNM colleges/schools, departments, community partners, and global and national employers/recruiters.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Directs and oversees the activities and operations of the career services office; ensures efficient, timely, and effective programs and services.
  2. Oversees the supervision of staff and supervisory personnel, which includes work allocation, training, promotion and enforcement of internal procedures and controls, and problem resolution; evaluates performance and makes recommendations for personnel actions; motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance.
  3. Establishes and implements short- and long-range organizational goals, objectives, strategic plans, policies, and operating procedures; monitors and evaluates programmatic and operational effectiveness, and effects changes required for improvement.
  4. Develops and manages annual budgets for the organization and performs periodic cost and productivity analyses; plans, develops, and implements strategies for generating resources and/or revenues for the organization.
  5. Designs, establishes, and maintains an organizational structure and staffing to effectively accomplish the organization's goals and objectives; oversees recruitment, training, supervision, and evaluation of unit staff.
  6. Collaborates with academic administrators to identify, define, and meet student career planning and placement needs, goals, and objectives.
  7. Establishes relationships and serves as a liaison between the University and communities and agencies with respect to community services and economic development initiatives.
  8. Develops marketing strategies and resources to identify and attract students and potential employers.
  9. Establishes and maintains databases to support and deliver services and resources to the university, employers, and students.
  10. Represents the University to various institutional divisions as well as externally to governmental agencies, vendors, students, and their parents, and/or the general public.
  11. Recommends and participates in the development of University policies and procedures; may serve on University planning and policy-making committees.
  12. Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act.
  13. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Master's degree in Counseling or an equivalent field; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Certification/Licensure: State of New Mexico Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) or equivalent OR licensure pending, as documented by temporary license.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

  • Knowledge of counseling accreditation and certification requirements and standards.
  • Knowledge of community mental health resources.
  • Ability to oversee the clinical supervision of career counselors.
  • Ability to develop and maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures.
  • Skill in budget preparation and fiscal management.
  • Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures.
  • Database management skills.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart information to a range of clientele and/or media sources.
  • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of marketing strategies, processes, and available resources.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.
  • Ability to identify and secure alternative funding/revenue sources.
  • Knowledge of targeted recruitment principles, procedures, and resources.
  • Knowledge of computerized student information systems.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.

Conditions of Employment

  • Employees in this job title are subject to the terms and conditions of an employment contract. Employment contracts are typically subject to review and renewal on an annual basis.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
