Summary

Develops, leads, coordinates, implements, and assesses integrated academic student success programs aimed to improve students' academic performance, demonstrate students' achievement of desired learning outcomes, and increase graduates' success on the bar examination. Collaborates with faculty and administration to design, implement and assess an academic achievement program and a bar preparation program at the School of Law. Collaborates with faculty and administration to align student learning outcomes and assessments with academic, governmental, and legal professional standards, as well as with the School of Law's mission, goals, and strategic plan. Develops and implements strategic and operating plans, and interprets, adapts, and integrates university policies and procedures, as appropriate, to meet the needs of the department. Manages all staff engaged in student success activities for the department and serves as a member of the management team in planning, problem resolution and reviewing department performance.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Plans, develops, and implements creative, integrated programs and initiatives dealing with academic support, bar preparation, and learning outcomes and assessment ensuring that all individual activities are integrated and consistent with the overall mission, strategic goals, objectives, and policies of the organization.
  2. May supervise staff and/or students, which includes work allocation, training, promotion and enforcement of internal procedures and controls, and problem resolution; evaluates performance and makes recommendations for personnel actions; motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance.
  3. Serves as a liaison among faculty, students, and administration by addressing relevant issues and resolving academic-related problems.
  4. Participates in the development, implementation and maintenance of policies, objectives, short-and long-range planning; develops and implements projects and programs to assist in accomplishment of established goals. Makes recommendations to improve the School of Law's teaching effectiveness.
  5. Provides counsel and advice to new students, students on academic probation, students "at risk," and any other student seeking to improve academic performance and on other academic issues including course scheduling, social influences, and other relevant issues; assists in developing individualized learning plans and monitoring progress.
  6. Provides advice to students on course selection for bar examination preparation purposes. Tracks all students' preparation for the bar examination and performance on the examination. Teaches or assists in the coordination of for-credit bar strategies courses.
  7. Creates, delivers, and assesses comprehensive programming designed to assist students with transition to law school, effective utilization of academic resources tools, and assesses skills and knowledge, with the goal of promoting successful completion of the Juris Doctor program.
  8. Oversees school-wide plan for academic assessment, determining timeframe for assessment stages, and coordinating academic assessment activities. Integrates program review and outcomes assessment results into future planning.
  9. Identifies, designs, coordinates, promotes and delivers innovative and relevant faculty and staff professional development programs regarding educational assessment. Maintains a library of assessment methodology, ideas, and materials; builds and maintains a pool of current resources and information about national assessment issues by attending appropriate conferences and procuring relevant publications.
  10. Develops and maintains, with technical support, web page, social media, and other communications regarding the academic achievement program and services.
  11. Monitors, implements, and shares with relevant constituencies the current research on adult learning and legal education.
  12. Collaborates with main campus Accessibility Services Department and the law school Registrar to plan, implement, and direct programs, policies, and services for law students with disabilities.
  13. Serves as a resource for faculty and administration in the School of Law's efforts to satisfy the assessment requirements of the American Bar Association.
  14. Provides expertise and general support to faculty and administration in developing, measuring, and analyzing learning outcomes, as well as provides support in mapping and documenting the relationship between the law school curriculum and all relevant learning outcomes. Provides bar-related information to faculty members regarding topics tested and recent bar exam questions.
  15. Prepares and presents relevant analysis and reports, and assists in the maintenance of national, school-wide, or departmental assessment reports as requested and appropriate.
  16. Assists students and graduates develop skills necessary for success with the bar examination and attorney licensing requirements, including developing and executing customized study plans and strategies for passing the bar exam.
  17. Meets regularly with students and graduates who are preparing for the bar examination, reviews sample bar examination essays, and provides analysis and feedback to help students improve their skills.
  18. Provides a clearing-house of bar preparation and examination information for students and graduates, as well as faculty who seek to incorporate bar examination material into doctrinal courses and research.
  19. Analyzes bar examination results (including statistical analysis), provides regular reports concerning results, and incorporates information into program adjustments designed to increase bar success rates.
  20. Monitors bar examination developments in New Mexico and nationally and evaluates new developments in the delivery of bar support by law schools.
  21. Maintains strong working relationships with the State of New Mexico Board of Bar Examiners, relevant national organizations, and commercial bar preparation vendors.
  22. Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act.
  23. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Program planning, development, implementation, and leadership skills.
  • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Knowledge and understanding of graduate academic advisement principles and procedures.
  • Knowledge and understanding of student learning outcomes, and skill in designing and implementing valid tools to assess those outcomes.
  • Ability to foster an open and welcoming environment conducive to providing advice and counsel to professional students and graduates.
  • Knowledge of higher education in the areas of academic assistance or similar administrative, teaching, or legal practice experience.
  • Knowledge of how to prepare students for success on the bar examination, specifically regarding the MBE, MEE, and MPT.
  • Skill in prioritizing and completing multiple tasks of varying complexity and urgency in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in accordance with FERPA regulations and school policies, and other State and Federal laws.
  • Knowledge of learning theories and best practices in effective pedagogy, formative and summative assessment, curriculum design, and educational learning theory.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present effectively to small and large groups.
  • Strong organizational skills.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort
