Summary

Assists students, alumni and other designated clients in developing, evaluating, and/or implementing employment plans and decisions with special emphasis on assisting students, faculty and employers to connect.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Coaches and prepares students and/or alumni for finding suitable employment by developing job-search skills, effective presentation skills, and understanding of all services available through individual advising and/or group/class presentations.
  2. Coaches and assists students and/or alumni to seek desired employment opportunities.
  3. Coaches and assists student and/or alumni to gain experience through student activities, community service, student employment, research projects, cooperative education, internships and other creative opportunities.
  4. Creates and manages the link between alumni, employers, and professional organizations who will provide opportunities for students/alumni to develop professional interests and competencies, integrate academic learning and work, and to explore future career possibilities.
  5. Works with faculty in order to develop understanding of the curriculum and corresponding job market to build potential employer contacts.
  6. Provides office hours to assigned college areas to advise students and deliver employment services information.
  7. Utilizes available computer technology to design and deliver presentations, design and edit office publications, and maintain required statistical information.
  8. Develops the personal, internet and print resources necessary to accurately and professionally advise students, alumni and employers.
  9. May lead and/or guide other staff, either same or lower level, or student workers.
  10. Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act.
  11. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to interact with students, faculty and/or staff in a team environment.
  • Ability to advise students/alumni with regard to resume writing, cover letter writing, interviewing skills and job search strategies.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging trends in technologies, techniques, issues, and approaches in area of expertise.
  • Ability to identify and develop employment opportunities at the internship, co-op and full-time levels.
  • Knowledge of career development, career testing, resource library utilization, on-campus recruiting, job postings resume referrals and career fairs.
  • Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures.
  • Proofreading and editing skills.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative environment to work within the department, as well as with constituencies in other organizational units.
  • Ability to create, compose, and edit written materials.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position requires: a) Assisting students and/or alumni in the development of materials and job search or interview skills to aid in finding employment opportunities; b) facilitating contact between students/alumni and University resources as well as external employers and professional organizations; c) maintaining records and statistical information; d) If position is located in an area other than the Office of Career Services within the Division of Student Affairs, ensures alignment with the processes and standards set by the Office of Career Services to provide high-quality services to students, alumni, and other designated clients.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must attain Global Career Development Facilitation (GCDF) Certificate through the Center for Credentialing and Education within six months of hire into this position.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
