Summary

Under direct supervision, provides basic entry-level interpreting/transliterating services for students, faculty, staff, and/or visitors requiring such services. Works under the close guidance and supervision of a Certified Sign Language Interpreter.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Performs basic entry-level interpreting/transliterating services.
  2. Follows instructions and receives guidance and training from certified SL interpreters on a task-by-task basis.
  3. Abides by the Code of Professional Conduct as set forth by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.
  4. Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act.
  5. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED; no previous experience required. Certification/Licensure: Candidate for RID/NIC Certification and New Mexico Provisional Signed Language Interpreter License.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Working knowledge of American Sign Language and English.
  • Ability to legibly present sign language to clientele.
  • Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must maintain certification status.
  • Must pass written portion of the RID/NIC certification exam, and New Mexico Provisional Signed Language Interpreter License.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
