Summary

Within a centralized admissions environment, determines student applicants' admissibility to the University. Evaluates transcripts and assigns students to appropriate academic units. Advises potential students on admission requirements and options, transfer/articulation, and related issues. Establishes and administers programs for targeting, recruitment, and retention of defined groups of students, and visits schools or colleges to make presentations to groups and individuals. Develops associated programs and marketing materials.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Determines admissibility, transferability of credit, and residency for new and readmitted undergraduate students; classifies and places students into appropriate academic units.
  2. Visits schools and colleges, speaks to groups and individual students, and meets with school officials to develop partnerships between the University and other institutions throughout the state; coordinates community workshops, retreats, and on-site admissions programs.
  3. Advises students and families regarding educational opportunities and options, admission and other requirements, policies and procedures, transfer of credit, and financial assistance, as appropriate.
  4. Contributes to the institutional database of prospective/potential and current students in the state.
  5. Analyzes trends in student recruitment and retention programs; designs and implements recruitment programs for targeted groups of potential students, and develops strategies for program evaluation.
  6. Creates and distributes a range of resource and promotional materials designed for the recruitment and retention of targeted groups.
  7. Prepares reports and proposals, and responds to inquiries from students and external agencies.
  8. Develops operating goals and objectives for the unit; implements and administers methods and procedures to enhance operations, as appropriate to the unit.
  9. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

  • Ability to develop and deliver presentations.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of student recruitment and retention issues.
  • Knowledge of the broad spectrum of available university academic units, curricula, and programs.
  • Ability to develop, plan, and implement short- and long-range goals.
  • Ability to travel on occasion outside the metropolitan area.
  • Organizing and coordinating skills.
  • Skill in the use of computerized systems and databases.
  • Ability to design and write promotional material.
  • Ability to evaluate student transcripts and/or records.
  • Knowledge of university admissions policies, standards, and procedures.

Conditions of Employment

  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the US-UNM Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Light physical effort. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 10 pounds or some standing or walking. Effort applies to no more than two (2) hours per day.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
