Summary

Under the direction of the University Planner, manages and coordinates space planning initiatives across the University to support and enhance the built environment. Works independently and collaboratively to develop comprehensive space plans that meet current and future needs of various departments and units. Facilitates, coordinates, and leads the execution of space planning projects to ensure alignment with institutional objectives and compliance with relevant codes and regulations.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Collaborates in campus capital and long-term planning initiatives, focusing on asset management and space planning and optimization.
  2. Conducts feasibility studies, defining project goals, objectives, constraints, and performing space utilization and optimization assessments.
  3. Engages with stakeholders to define organizational space requirements in line with University standards, developing graphic plans to establish efficient spatial adjacencies.
  4. Partners with staff and consultants to design building layouts that adhere to industry and code compliance standards, including ADA regulations.
  5. Creates space plan layouts consistent with University guidelines, updating workspace standards to reflect space optimization and directives from the Space Allocation Committee and Asset Management Committee.
  6. Maintains accurate and accessible space databases and floor plans ensuring alignment with established guidelines.
  7. Performs space audits to assess utilization and collaborates with internal teams and consultants to optimize space allocation.
  8. Supports committees by providing expertise and recommendations related to campus space planning efforts.
  9. Assists the University Planner in developing comprehensive campus space optimization and allocation procedures and plans
  10. May supervise personnel, which may include recommendations for hiring, firing, performance evaluation, training, work allocation, and problem resolution.
  11. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Technical knowledge of space planning and design, including code compliance and ADA regulations.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Microsoft Office, Adobe Suite, and other relevant software applications used in planning and architecture projects.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, and critical thinking skills gained within a complex, demanding work environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to produce graphic blocking plans and space layouts that optimize space utilization and efficiency.
  • Knowledge of budgeting, cost estimating, and fiscal management principles related to facilities planning.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a diverse community of faculty, staff, and students.
  • Ability to maintain and update space guidelines, standards, databases, and maps accurately.
  • Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures.
  • Ability to summarize data, draw conclusions and inferences, and prepare reports and/or presentations.
  • Ability to plan, develop, organize, document, and facilitate meetings, retreats, workshops, and public forums.

Conditions of Employment

  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
  • Work includes visits to existing facilities and construction sites, and may involve in-state travel to branch campuses and/or other remote locations.
  • Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt dust, fumes, unpleasant odors and loud noises.
