Summary
Undertakes a professional internship designed to provide on-the-job training and experience to recent college graduates within an applied engineering or other advanced technical field. Engages in various work assignments, projects and activities of varying technical complexity, structured to enable the intern to gain the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities needed to perform at a professional, technical level, typically identified with a targeted exempt position within the field of information technology, engineering, or other applied science. Receives training and mentorship in planning and carrying out activities and assignments. This is a fixed-term position, typically up to 24 months.
Duties and Responsibilities
Provides entry- to intermediate-level professional engineering or advanced technical services, under supervision of more senior professional staff and/or faculty personnel, as appropriate to the day-to-day operating objectives of the unit.
Undertakes and/or participates in engineering or technical design projects and programs designed to develop professional skills and expertise that will support the units design and engineering, information technology, and/or other technical needs.
Participates in the design, planning and implementation of unit projects and initiatives within engineering, construction and/or other advanced technical areas of expertise.
Interacts directly with colleagues, clientele, and/or other internal or external constituencies in the planning of assignments and the resolution of day-to-day operational problems.
Receives guidance, training, and mentoring from more senior professional personnel in designing, planning and carrying out activities and assignments.
As appropriate to the position, and as specified by unit management, conducts original design and/or research and prepares reports based on findings, to included recommendations or alternative proposals for action.
May provide day-to-day guidance and support to student employees and/or interns within area of specialty.
May undertake related studies or enrichment programs as appropriate to the specific objectives of the operating unit.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
Must have obtained a Bachelor's of Science degree or higher level of Science degree, related to the work to be completed, no more than 24 months prior to the date of hire OR if the Bachelor's of Science (or higher level) degree was obtained more than 24 months prior to the date of hire, the individual must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor's (or higher) degree program; no previous experience required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ability to understand and follow complex, detailed technical instructions.
Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
Project development and planning skills.
Entry-level engineering and/or advanced technical knowledge and skill at the Bachelor's or Master's of Science level within specified area of technical professional specialty.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Position requires: a defined development plan to enable the intern to gain the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform at a professional level within a field of applied science, such as engineering, construction, or information technology, (typically identified by a targeted exempt classification) upon completion of the internship program.
Conditions of Employment
Must present transcripts prior to a formal offer being extended.
Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
This is a fixed-term position, typically up to 24 months.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Light physical effort. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 10 pounds or some standing or walking. Effort applies to no more than two (2) hours per day.
No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
