The following statements are intended to describe, in broad terms, the general functions and responsibility levels characteristic of positions assigned to this classification. They should not be viewed as an exhaustive list of the specific duties and prerequisites applicable to individual positions that have been so classified.
Summary
Under general supervision, independently evaluates, selects, and applies standard engineering research techniques, procedures, and criteria to make minor adaptations and modifications to research assignments. Performs research which involves conventional types of plans, investigations, surveys, structures, or equipment with relatively few complex functions.
Duties and Responsibilities
Designs, analyzes, builds, and tests special-purpose equipment and/or instrumentation for research purposes concerning national defense, outer space, industry, or global environment.
Coordinates research on new materials of special interest which are scientifically objective and of significant value to society.
Performs research assignments involving conventional types of plans, investigations, surveys, structures, or equipment which may involve complex functions or features.
Applies engineering theory to solve mechanical, environmental, or fabrication problems; implements advanced tools and databases in object-oriented and relational environments.
Makes preliminary selections and adaptations of engineering alternatives requiring the exercise of judgment to a moderate degree.
Receives and carries out instructions on specific assignment objectives, complex features, and possible solutions; reviews results of tests with faculty or graduate students.
Serves as principal investigator, as appropriate, on sub-projects of complexities consistent with above criteria.
Maintains currency of knowledge with respect to relevant state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and/or systems.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
Bachelor's degree in a directly related field; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
Ability to develop and follow research methodology and protocol.
Knowledge of current technological developments/trends in area of expertise.
Engineering and/or scientific design and testing skills.
Ability to design, organize, and coordinate scientific and/or engineering research projects.
Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
Ability to conduct systematic analysis and develop solutions to complex scientific and/or engineering problems.
Ability to use independent judgment to develop model concepts and approaches for research.
Knowledge of engineering, science, and mathematics fundamentals.
Knowledge of engineering and/or scientific research principles, practices, and protocols.
Skill in the use of routine laboratory equipment.
Ability to evaluate and advise on the work of students in area of specialty.
Ability to use independent judgment to adapt and modify research concepts and approaches to specific projects.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Position requires: a) use of standard engineering and mathematical principles to design, build, and test both standard and special-purpose equipment and/or instrumentation for research purposes; b) coordination of research on new materials and engineering concepts of significant import; c) independent performance of conventional, but sometimes complex research assignments as part of an integrated research project; d) design, oversight, and coordination of engineering research sub-projects of standard to intermediate complexity; e) making minor adaptations and modifications to research protocol as appropriate.
