Summary

Under direct supervision of senior engineering staff, provides engineering expertise within a specialized discipline to support university-wide utility monitoring, sustainable initiatives, and facilities planning. Contributes to campus-wide construction and maintenance programs by developing data analysis methodologies, assessing engineering needs, and advising on project parameters, budgets, and compliance with engineering standards.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Develops methodology and data analysis techniques for the monitoring of utility consumption and university-wide.
  2. Collects, compiles, and analyzes field data for engineering projects; identifies trends and areas for improvement.
  3. Supports sustainable initiatives by contributing to planning and implementation strategies, as directed.
  4. Identifies, investigates, analyzes, and recommends action on a wide range of engineering problems and development needs university-wide, in consultation with senior engineering staff.
  5. Assists in providing university-wide consultation, coordination, and leadership in the planning, development, and implementation of construction and/or repair programs within the broad area of engineering specialty.
  6. Supports the project manager in overseeing comprehensive engineering design projects by setting project parameters, evaluating compliance with project and engineering standards, and assisting in final design and installation approvals.
  7. Calculates and estimates preliminary project budgets and timelines, providing foundational data to support project development.
  8. Contributes to project implementation planning by assisting in developing strategies and scheduling.
  9. Represents technical discipline in the engineering aspects of strategic facilities planning on a university-wide basis, as appropriate.
  10. Applies an analytical approach to the solution of a wide variety of problems, or applies specialized techniques or ingenuity in selecting and evaluating approaches to unforeseen or novel problems.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a directly related Engineering field; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

  • Advanced data analysis and interpretive skills within area of expertise.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of engineering principles, methods, and techniques within broad area of specialty.
  • Ability to manipulate, understand, and summarize large sets of data.
  • Ability to analyze complex engineering problems and devise creative and effective solutions.
  • Project development and planning skills.
  • Ability to adapt and modify engineering techniques and develop original model concepts within area of professional expertise.
  • Ability to identify and implement effective solutions to complex issues in compliance with federal, state, and local laws as well as University policies and procedures.
  • Ability to represent the University to the community, and the community to the University.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex technical concepts, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to assist in the development and management of project budgets, and to track project costs using computer spreadsheet techniques.

Conditions of Employment

  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Successful completion of Engineer-in-Training (EIT) examination within 6 months of hire.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work environment involves minimal exposure to physical risks, such as operating dangerous equipment or working with chemicals.
  • Light physical effort. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 10 pounds or some standing or walking. Effort applies to no more than two (2) hours per day.
  • Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
