Summary

Under limited supervision, provides a full range of advanced professional engineering services within a broadly defined engineering discipline such as mechanical, electrical, structural/civil utilities, and/or environmental engineering, in support of campus-wide physical plant construction/repair and facilities planning programs. Performs and/or oversees integrated engineering planning, design, and development, and provides strategic professional leadership, guidance, technical coordination, and review to engineering consultants and support staff on a project basis, as appropriate to the discipline.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Provides campus-wide consultation, coordination, and professional leadership in the planning, development, and implementation of construction and/or repair programs within the broad area of engineering specialty.
2. Serves as project manager on comprehensive engineering design projects; sets project parameters, evaluates compliance with project and engineering standards, and approves final designs and installations.
3. Oversees, reviews, and approves the work of external engineering design and planning consultants; ensures that engineering designs are consistent with contract specifications and all relevant regulations and engineering standards.
4. Identifies, investigates, and analyzes a wide range of complex engineering problems and development needs university-wide, within broad area of specialty.
5. Adapts and/or modifies standard engineering techniques to develop integrated, original, and creative model design concepts in response to engineering problems and development needs within the discipline.
6. Provides expert consultation and coordinates and integrates activities with representatives of other engineering disciplines as required on a project basis.
7. Plans and develops project budgets within overall budget and cost parameters, and develops appropriate project implementation strategies and plans.
8. Represents discipline as appropriate in the engineering aspects of strategic facilities planning on a university-wide basis.
9. Oversees and coordinates the work of lower level engineers and/or technical support staff as appropriate; may participate in recruitment, training, and evaluation of staff.
10. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in a directly related Engineering field; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
• Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

• Advanced knowledge and understanding of engineering principles, methods, and techniques within broad area of specialty.
• Knowledge and understanding of all relevant federal and state laws, regulations, and operating guidelines.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
• Ability to provide technical leadership and project management to engineering projects of high complexity and broadranging scope.
• Ability to adapt and modify engineering techniques and develop original model concepts within area of professional expertise.
• Ability to manage and coordinate the work of technical consultants and/or contractors.
• Ability to develop and manage project budgets, and to track and project costs using computer spreadsheet techniques.
• Knowledge and understanding of allied disciplines and ability to coordinate interdisciplinary teams.
• Ability to analyze complex engineering problems and devise creative and effective solutions.
• Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.

Conditions of Employment

• Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
• Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
• Professional Engineer (PE) may be required, depending upon field of expertise.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

• Light physical effort. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 10 pounds or some standing or walking. Effort applies to no more than two (2) hours per day.
• Work environment involves minimal exposure to physical risks, such as operating dangerous equipment or working with chemicals.
• Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
